let’s hope it’s a permanent ceasefire and that hostages and those arrested without any reason are soon returned to their families.

That's a disgrace.

Is Netanyahu now accepting the same three phase deal that was on the table months ago?

It really goes to show that with the right pressure this could have been over with months ago. The hostages would have been home, 1000s of Palestinians would still be alive and so much trauma could have been prevented. Shame on Biden, he really has so much blood on his hands.

It looks pretty much the same from what I read of the deal months ago. Maybe some small changes but it doesn't look like anything major has changed.

I agree. Weak and ineffective.

Trump has set himself up as the "Man to end wars and to broker ceasefires" and so it is essential that he visibly manages to achieve either one or the other.

My guess is that he has put pressure on Netanyahu to accept a ceasefire, however, I would be very surprised if Netanyahu had not extracted something from Trump in return.

Perhaps Israel asked for, or the US offered, to turn a blind eye to whatever Israel proposes to do in the West Bank in the future. It wouldn't surprise me.

dairydebris · 14/01/2025 14:28

Great news.
I'm very eager to hear more about who will be running Gaza moving forwards.
Sad to hear that efforts to find Palestinian candidates have so far been fruitless. They need leadership not hell bent on Israel's destruction then hopefully this awful cycle can stop.

Unfortunately, you are probably correct.

"I'm very eager to hear more about who will be running Gaza moving forwards."
@dairydebris

It will probably be Hamas or some iteration of Hamas that will go on to administer Gaza as there is no one else to do so. Hamas will have to divest itself of the military/terrorist wing of its operation.
Although to many it might sound distasteful and disgraceful that Hamas remain in control ( me included) in the real world of politics it can be the only way forward as there is no one else that the residents of Gaza trust.

West Bank, East Jerusalem and in time Gaza too.

Except most sensible commentary is saying the opposite. That the transactional nature of Trump's approach to the region and desire to have good relations with other ME states, most notably Saudi means that a path to Palestinian statehood is actually part of the bigger picture.

@SharonEllis it may be that the best thing to come out of this would be a moderation in Iran.

That still leaves Putin and the Chinese.

Wish this was true. A good start would be not to invite settlers to trumps inauguration

I think you're all missing the point. Trump doesn't need to care about the Palestinians, that's a red herring. All he cares about is what he needs to do to achieve his aims in the region. I do recommend avoiding conspiracies about 'zionist' power.

I’m not sure Netanyahu has the leverage to demand much of Trump

I really hope this is true .
He’s just so unpredictable and volatile that it is concerning.
But in the positive side his very unpredictability can cause his foes to be wary so might lead to good outcomes. 🤞

Those trying to argue that Pro-Israeli lobbyists and donors are controlling the US government, aside from the antisemitic trope really need to do more research. Maybe this idea has particular traction here because we are not used to such vsst sums in our politics. They are normal in America. Most of Trumps major donors have many, many interests other than Israel. AiPAC doesnt even feature in the top 50 lobbyist organisations in US politics (the Chamber of Commerce spends about 20 times more) and the Israeli government doesn't even feature in the list of top government lobbyists. The Liberian government spends more than Israel but when did you hear of the 'Liberian Lobby'. In the ME Saudi, UAE and Qatar all spend more than Israel.

I'll state the obvious and say that it is so late in the day - genocide has already taken place.

This. Nearly 50 years too late.

Hoping, wishing, and praying to every God or Goddess who will listen that this brings some peace to Palestine
