Still hopeful
Hostage release and ceasefire will be great. Hopeful that the ceasefire is permanent.

Israel have said they will stay in Gaza permanently. The way they are currently in the west bank and we know how peaceful that is, so I'm not too hopeful.

Whatsinanamehey · 17/12/2024 18:41

If that is incorrect, then I will be glad to be told otherwise. It's far past the time this war came to an end.

"The Palestinian official outlined a three-phase plan which would see civilians and women soldiers held hostage in Gaza released in the first 45 days, with Israeli forces pulling out of city centres, the coastal road and the strategic strip of land along the border with Egypt.
There would be a mechanism for displaced Gazans to be able to return to the north of the territory, the official said.
A second stage would see remaining hostages freed and troops withdrawn before the third stage ending the war."

It's in your BBC link

He has since written on X: "My position on Gaza is clear. After we defeat Hamas's military and governmental power in Gaza, Israel will have security control over Gaza with full freedom of action," comparing this to the situation in the occupied West Bank.
"We will not allow any terrorist activity against Israeli communities and Israeli citizens from Gaza. We will not allow a return to the reality of before 7 October."

That sounds quite scary to me, what's full freedom of action? I assume it also means there is no hope for a two state solution

I see Israel Katz wrote that subsequently on X. No idea if that's covered in the ceasefire agreement.

The other stories show withdrawal in stages so I've no idea what 'security control' means. I'm hoping for a new government in Gaza that won't be anything like Hamas. That means Hamas have to go of course. I'm guessing but if hamas remains in charge then Israel will always think they'll attack again so need so firm of security control over borders etc?

Was a 2 state solution rejected many times?

That's what's confusing, his words are contradicting what is supposedly on the phased deal which includes a full withdrawal.

Whatsinanamehey · 17/12/2024 19:46

Is he purposely trying to sabotage the deal by making comments that are inflammatory and contradicting what is being agreed on?

YoYoYoYo12345 · 17/12/2024 19:48

There's a big shift in the middle east. Still waiting on whether the new Syrian leaders are true to terrorist roots or more moderate now. Assad was vile so hopefully better for ordinary people, who knows?
Hamas still in gaza.

At least a ceasefire is being talked about again. Some hope at least.

I'm just trying to decipher the tweet and would assume if Israel retain security control it wouldn't be possible for a Palestinian state, in the future, maybe I'm reading too much into it

I've no idea. All guessing at this stage.

I really hope so, this whole war has been so awful.
God speed to the Israel troops.

@YoYoYoYo12345 How is it a guessing game when Netyanhu himself has openly argued against the two-state solution for years?
