The UK, France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Greece, Norway and Austria have all announced today that they’re pausing asylum claims from Syrians due to the fall of the regime. Austria has gone even further and seems to already be talking about deportations.

What's the rationale? To stop Assad sympathisers getting in?

ThatWaryHedgehog · 09/12/2024 20:58

Well the public line is that the situation’s changed and so there needs to be further assessment. I guess claims were based on fleeing the Assad regime.

Yes but there's hardly stability there yet. Seems very sudden and premature. Maybe someone else might have a better insight into why the rush to do it.

Maybe they're worried about a huge influx. The media makes Syria look as if it's mostly demolished.

Who knows what's going to happen next, who's going to fund rebuilding it.

I suspect that it is because immigration is a political hot potato and governments are keen to show they are actively getting people to go home.

Good point on the Assad supporters. It feels like he had no Syrian supporters left. I was interested to read that the opposition flag was even raised at the Syrian embassy in Russia.

It's because their reasons for fleeing Syria have changed. However the situation is in flux as it looks like various terrorist organisations are taking over.
