A thread to see how Gazans are coping in a war situation. Most of the links have been posted on TikTok within the last two weeks.

Price of a packet of macaroni in Rafah, south Gaza Strip - 13 shekels ($3.60).

@MrsSkylerWhite no, not news. It is just another source of information from a primary source, posted by Gazans just posting about their lives in a war situation.

We can see when something is posted but where do we find confirmation of when something was filmed? And is there any way to confirm filming location?

Saying talk about Ramadan dates the filming is like saying me talking about Easter dates a post.

In other words, news you obviously believe and want others to believe too.

"Assume" is doing a lot of very heavy lifting there.

Twitter is a hellsite, rife with propaganda of all sorts. I don't believe anything that is posted unless there is a verifiable source.

OK then. Its very likely that some will take more foie aid than they should and sell for profit whilst others starve. Some people are greedy and selfish. This doesn't mean that aid shouldn't be provided though. It just needs to reach the ones that really need it.

It’s actually fascinating watching posters who regularly promote and disseminate unverified, highly prejudiced SM posts as primary, truthful sources of information react to sources that challenge their confirmation bias.

Yes. The thread about the IDF (I believe it's the 3rd or so thread mow) is full of unverified posts from x, Instagram and Tic toc. This op posts things and apparently it's not OK now. There is so much Gaza good Israel bad on MN.

Both 'sides' have committed awful acts. There is pain on both 'sides'.

I don't doubt that some hamas or general Palestinian men have grabbed food aid and sell it on for profit whilst children are starving. There are a mix of good and awful people in every society.

@Efacsen
“There are only 2 or 3 markets functioning in Gaza ATM due to lack of goods to sell and widespread fighting - the photos of them online I've seen look like pitiful affairs

SM posts give no real indication of how much food/food aid is being sold”

I know of the market in the central Gaza Strip in Deir el-Balah, and there is a market in Rafah, but I don’t know of any others.
Yes, I agree sm posts are no indication of how much food/ food aid is being sold.
I read an article yesterday that the Idf were asking local clans/families (?) to help organise the protection of humanitarian aid. Many refused but one has accepted and one is considering.

USA dropped food packages on Gaza today. This man said that they should be distributed for free, but he bought them, to show us what is in them.
Posted on March 2nd.

I am not sure if the food is this sort because it is lighter for the planes? Somehow it seems slightly poor value nutrition compared to tins of beans and oily fish, for example. Is it that that would not work for an airdrop?

On the subject of this thread, I have been amazed seeing in news shots from Gaza how resilient Palestinian mothers are in still washing all their family’s clothes, which you see drying on the tent lines, all in the midst of devastation.

@ScrollingLeaves I don’t know about the air drops. Yes, that package does seem nutritionally lacking.

Yes, agreed re resilient mothers. This was posted 5 days ago it doesn’t say where in the Gaza Strip and shows drying on tent lines as well as balconies. Also how phones are being charged.

@Efacsen Yes, trucks with aid should take priority. I had no idea in war situations they would have commercial trucks going in. You obviously have worked in this field. Thanks for the information.

You appear to know nothing about aid, food aid, the economies of countries that require aid. But you're happy to spout about this. It's almost like it's not about aid, it's about Gaza. Link after link after link.

FWIW since around Live Aid there has been a recognition that aid has to be careful. Otherwise it doesn't save the people at the time (because it's too late) but it does suppress the markets afterwards and create dependency. So yes, it's better to try to have as much 'life as normal' as possible. Maybe read some UN reports on aid, some books, some accounts from elsewhere.

I've reported the thread.

Homeeducation1 · 05/03/2024 14:37

@MrsTerryPratchett The thread’s title is about Gaza. Not sure why you would think I would link to something else.

OP posts:
MrsTerryPratchett · 05/03/2024 14:44

My point being you seem to think you're an expert on food aid from links when the links are clearly just to say "Gaza, nothing to see here, go about your day, everything is fine".

Homeeducation1 · 05/03/2024 14:58

@MrsTerryPratchett Nope, not an expert on aid at all. And no, Gaza is obviously not fine. That is your interpretation of the thread but that was not my intention at all. I have already explained why I started the thread.
