A thread to see how Gazans are coping in a war situation. Most of the links have been posted on TikTok within the last two weeks.

Price of a packet of macaroni in Rafah, south Gaza Strip - 13 shekels ($3.60).

I can't hear the commentary what are they saying?

Homeeducation1 · 05/03/2024 08:44

Nedaa uploaded footage of Deir el-Balah market today. It is recent footage because they talk about Ramadan, and Ramadan knicknacks are on sale in the market. Needa is looking after her children in the central Gaza Strip.

Is the guy selling pasta for £3.60 that came in as humanitarian aid? As per the comments. He's not starving but children are. If so, isn't the aid supposed to be shared out rather than sold by some traders who obviously grabbed more than their fair share. Is this just more corruption whilst children die of starvation?

USA dropped food packages on Gaza today. This man said that they should be distributed for free, but he bought them, to show us what is in them.

The Twitter account you are linking too seems a bit off to me. Gaza is "conning the world" and being "picky" about food?

@IClaudine This lady has been following Gazans social media for the last few years. The TikTok’s are all taken from Gazans. It is a little astonishing that people are having to buy food aid.

Yes, but she seems biased against Gazans. She is not a neutral source of information, so I don't trust what she posts.

Welcome to Mumsnet, btw.

I just had a look at it and thought the same thing. Not only biased but quite hateful towards the Gazans

Homeeducation1 · 05/03/2024 09:15

@AliceA2021 Yes they are buying food aid. I can only assume that either it is being stolen and sold by individual traders or stolen by Hamas and sold to merchants to sell on. Perhaps a bit of both. The markets that are running seem to be well stocked (not of everything).
Inflation seems to be rife at the moment.
This is not to take away that living in Gaza is terrible at the moment.

Her whole angle seems to be that everything is fine and dandy in Gaza.

"Assume" is doing a lot of very heavy lifting there.

Twitter is a hellsite, rife with propaganda of all sorts. I don't believe anything that is posted unless there is a verifiable source.

Maybe I should text my friends and let them know to stop being dead so they can go eat burgers.

Homeeducation1 · 05/03/2024 09:19

@IClaudine What is a neutral source nowadays?
I was more interested at Gazans TikTok videos. Primary source of information.
You can literally go onto TikTok and follow Gazan posting about their lives.

Thanks. I first joined mumsnet 18 years ago.

I just checked my Twitter and "followers you know" of the account, she is followed by the biggest pro Israeli accounts including Jordan "Give them hell, Netanyahu" Peterson. So this Twitter account is obviously a propaganda/Hasbara account designed to dehumanise Palestinians and infer that they're "selling food" and obviously not being starved. It's sick.

Ah that would make sense, there's also lots of pictures of life before the war with captions like 'life in a concentration camp/open air prison' obviously being sarcastic.

The X account obviously is pro Israeli. Perhaps you should click on the link to the TikTok or instagram account and view the primary resource?

OP posts:
IClaudine · 05/03/2024 09:47

Homeeducation1 why did you choose to link to an iffy Twitter account rather than to the primary source?

AliceA2021 · 05/03/2024 09:53

I don't doubt that there will be men who quite happily grab thd aid and then sell onto others. Children have starved to death whilst men grab aid to sell. Ots awful.
