USA dropping aid into Gaza

Happy out this. Finally! Glad Joe Biden appears to be seeing sense.

I think it makes them look weak. The best way to get aid in is on trucks. Surely this has been put to Israel and yet Israel ignores it.

Anyway I'm not going to pat the US on the back for dropping a few measly aid parcels after all of the bombs they've supplied to Israel to drop.

LolaSmiles · 02/03/2024 13:12

I'm glad there's aid going in, but would like to see world leaders getting round a table and trying to get a resolution that centres civilian lives and their wellbeing on both sides of the conflict.

Aid packages right now are such a small gesture.

headstone · 02/03/2024 13:26

This won’t help much it’s just to make them look less bad to the American people. The only thing that will save the Palestinians from being starved by the occupier is a ceasefire.

mollyfolk · 02/03/2024 22:42

I just can't even express my discontent with this.

They supply the weapons bombing Gaza and then air drop aid to the civilians they are indirectly trying to kill. They are simply doing it because they are worried that it's certain they are complicit with crimes against humanity, they want to look more humane to their own voters and they are realising that they actually have zero influence over the actions of Israeli authorities who are blocking the proper delivery of aid.

If this had happened last November I'd be delighted by this show! But they are so beyond of the point of needing to pull the military aid.

Edited

Agreed but at least it sends a message to Israel.

Finally… after 30,000+ dead and 75,000+ injured, the enablers of genocide are dropping food parcels. Where’s Homer Simpson shouting “USA” when we need him?

mollyfolk · 02/03/2024 23:08

ForTonightGodisaDJ · 02/03/2024 22:53

Agreed but at least it sends a message to Israel.

A message that should have been sent back in October. Collective punishment is a war crime. It's a very small message and considering the death toll and the fact the Israel aren't listening to what the US is saying either privately or publicly - which is surprising for everyone really. I think they need to put an awful lot more pressure on.

But yes, small mercies, it's a clear sign that the US mean business now.

ohfourfoxache · 02/03/2024 23:13

Doesn’t send a message to Israel

Just shows that they are willing to do the absolute bare minimum to avoid an absolute shit show at home

A message to Israel would include “stop bombing” or “ceasefire”. A message to Israel would involve stopping selling them arms.

Parachuting in a few crappy boxes is nothing but a meaningless platitude.

FOJN · 02/03/2024 23:19

I read somewhere earlier that they had airdropped 38,000 meals.

That's probably fewer American supplied meals than bombs and yet they seem so pleased with their humanitarian efforts.

Bastards.

oh I don't know. I think it is a message. The US ultimately do want Israeli to stop with the whole blatant disregard of international law and the death toll and starvation is not getting anyone to their goals (reelection of democrats, peace in the middle east.... ) . Biden's words are much stronger and more "against" Israel than previously. I think it is a clear message and that there will be more to come. It's too little too late - but it's starting to happen at least. There has been a clear change of direction of what the US are saying.

“In addition to expanding deliveries by land, as I said, we’re going to insist that Israel facilitate more trucks and more routes to get more and more people the help they need,” Biden said. “No excuses, because the truth is [that] aid flowing to Gaza is nowhere nearly enough now. Innocent lives are on the line and children’s lives are on the line.
“We should be getting hundreds of trucks in, not just several,” he said. “And I won’t stand by, we won’t let up and we’re … trying to pull out every stop we can to get more assistance in.”

Interesting. It seems that Israel has dropped 29,000 bombs destroying 70% of residential homes in Gaza. So the US has fed 38,000 people once. Definitely a paltry gesture but a message nonetheless.

pickytube · 02/03/2024 23:50

Just a way to say " well we dropped some aid though" in the future so they could wipe their hands clean for being complicit.

Drops food with one hand and bombs with the other

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 02/03/2024 23:57

I wonder if Israeli soldiers will also shoot the Palestinians swimming out to gather the few measly food parcels that have been dropped into the sea. Nothing surprises me at this point.

The 29,000 figure was in the first 6 weeks of the bombing campaign.

Aljazeera and Le Monde reporting (in December) it was 29,000 bombs. The WSJ reporting it was 29,000 "bombs, munitions and shells".

Middle East Monitor reporting 45,000 bombs, weighting 65,000 tonnes, on 4th January.

Who knows what number we're up to now?

I absolutely agree with all of you. But any sign of change is a good sign.

The airdrops are largely symbolic.

38,000 meals is 1/2 of 1% of 1 days food needed.

The USA might have thought it would pressure Israel’s COGAT to step up the humanitarian aid, because the air drops are symbolic of Israel’s complete and utter failure to abide by IHL and the ICJ to ensure sufficient humanitarian aid is distributed in the Gaza Strip.

Air drops are only used when all other routes to get humanitarian aid are closed off and inaccessible. They are the method of last resort.

FOJN · 03/03/2024 12:28

EasterIssland · 03/03/2024 09:23

Exactly

I found the second image in your post really upsetting. Surprising given the many horrific images we've seen coming out of Gaza since October.

I think it's the colourful packaging on the food parcels, its the kind of thing that would appeal to children. Who decided that? Did they think colourful packaging would cheer up children who have been maimed, orphaned, had limbs amputated without anaesthetic or those who live in such fear that 5 year olds report wishing they were dead.

What next? Cartoon characters painted on bombs to make the kids smile before they die?

JustMaggie · 03/03/2024 12:56

This image says it all.

This image says it all.

To be mathematically correct, there should be a 12 square metre mural full of bombs with one 2mm crouton hidden in the image. In other words, the reality is much, much worse than even that graphic.
