Hirbawi Keffiyeh

I got an email this morning saying my Gaza hirbawi keffiyeh had arrived in the warehouse in Germany.

i have three already, the original with embroidered Palestine flag, an original patterned one on blue background (as I’m Scottish so seemed to fit), a the chocolate one.

i have a Bisan one on preorder in honour of Bisan from instagram, as honestly she is bloody amazing (along with all the others there but she is my favourite).

and I have notifications for quite a few more.

i wear one most days, not the embroidered Palestine flag one as that is extra special, mainly because it was more expensive and honestly I shouldn’t wear white it will just get dirty if I wear it. Though I did take some pictures with my dog in it just now.

anyone else got one?

they’re just honestly amazing, so beautiful.

the only Palestinian keffiyeh factory left: https://www.kufiya.org/
you can sign up to restock alerts on there.

How cute! Your dog reminds me of one of my old neighbours dogs who would always come over to say hello every time he would see me.
I have quite a few, some that I have purchased over the years and some that were gifted.
My favourite is one that looks similar to this aswell as the original Palestinian one.
They are very beautiful indeed

I have a very old one, from my parents, and bought a couple of new ones recently. Of course the old one is Palestinian-made, the newer ones probably not but still just as good quality as my original one.

They Palestinian embroidery is absolutely stunning and I hope they open up more of their factories when it is safe to do so. I would absolutely love to have something made from there

There are no other factories (at least not that I’ve read), Hirbawi is in the West Bank and the last remaining Palestinian factory. Mainly due to cheap copies from china etc being made and sold. It’s not really to do with the safety aspect.

In 1993 150,000 were being made a year, which fell to 10,000 a year in 2010. Then 1993 the cheap Chinese copies started being made and imported or exported around the world because of a free market adoption around then. And Israel severely hindering things.

you can read more about it here https://www.kufiya.org/the-kufiya-headdress-and-the-last-factory-in-palestine/

i highly recommend looking in the website seeing one you would like, or maybe a few options. Sign up to the email list and hope for the best. They said on their instagram that they’re hoping to restock every 2 weeks or so. They’re not prohibitively expensive for many people, around £30 with around 8-12£ shipping. But not everyone can afford that, but they are definitely worth it, they are just utterly wonderful things.

The Kufiya headdress and the last factory in Palestine - Hirbawi Kufiya

Origins of the Kufiya (Keffiyeh) The Kufiya (الكوفية) or “Keffiyeh” has a long history in Palestinian culture and identity. Since the first “Arab Revolt” against the British Colonial Empire in the1930s, this traditional arabic headdress become a nation...

Still have the one I brought back with me from Palestine 20+ years ago - I wear it everywhere these days, even to the office!

Are they still available?

I might need a replacement, and - while I am at it - I might as well get a few for all my friends and family!

I don’t think there’s any currently available for preorder but you can sign up to their restock list and also specific keffiyehs to get a notification when you can preorder. They go quick when they do restock though. And they do understandably take awhile to come. The Gaza one I mentioned that I’d got an update for I ordered end of November. I ordered the blue one a few before i ordered the Gaza one and it came between Christmas and new year, but i was quite lucky with that one, i think it was that they had some left over or something in the December shipment.

I have one from 30 years ago in Egypt just before islamic extremists started targeting westerners, my father had one as he was in Egypt 70 years ago.
I won't wear it, at this point it's either a political symbol or cultural appropration.
Nice of you to support local businesses, I hear micro loans can be helpful too.

Edit: not directed at the person I quoted, I’m editing so I can’t see your name sorry, just adding to the post.

This page from the Hirbawi USA website https://hirbawiusa.com/blogs/hirbawi-stories/but-im-not-palestinian explains it.

just for anyone who is interested. Though I do recommend you read it if you wish to wear one. And don’t go for the cheap knock offs, from china etc, or the ones the fashion high street store type people did.

But I'm Not Palestinian, can I wear a kufiya?

BUT I'M NOT PALESTINIAN, CAN I WEAR A KUFIYA? Cultural Respect | Solidarity | Understanding | Heritage "But I'm not Palestinian," you might say, and that's precisely what brings us to the heart of this conversation. Recently, we've been fielding questi...

The factory is in Hebron. It’s an amazing place and I would recommend visiting if you have the opportunity. I bought one while I was there and also some stunning hand blown (mouth blown?!) wine glasses. I’ve spent quite a bit of time in the West Bank. I think Israel is entirely entitled to defend itself and that they will never be safe until Hamas is destroyed, but I would recommend anyone to travel there if you have the opportunity (obviously not right now).

MissyB1 · 03/02/2024 14:21

Thank you I will order one.

Yeah Hebron is fab. Everyone should go there to see Israeli apartheid and occupation in action. It’s where Palestinians are not allowed to walk down “Israeli only” streets and have to erect metal covers to catch the rubbish thrown at them from above by settlers.

Well said

I’ve been waiting for them to come back into stock, I didn’t get a notification and it seems they are out again. I have my old original from 30 years ago which I wear everyday at the moment.

I sign up for the restock email, and the individual ones I want. I got the restock email but no email for the specific one I wanted, as I don’t think each one comes into stock each time. If that makes sense.

They restocked about 5:30pm ish (well that’s when I got the email). Thought I’d say, there were still a number of them in stock 30 minutes ago.

They restocked a couple hours ago, everyone. There’s a limit of one per order. If anyone is looking for one, there were still some available half an hour ago.
