Conflict in the Middle East

Genuine question - why does the USA support Israel so strongly?

Genuine question. I just don’t understand it. I do know some of the history, and the feelings about the need to create a Jewish homeland post WW2. However currently - Netanyahu and Biden don’t get on, Obama had a very frosty relationship with Netanyahu. The current Israeli coalition government contains some openly extremist politicians who have used racist rhetoric against the Palestinians in the past.
The IDF are clearly committing war crimes and the international pressure for a ceasefire is mounting.
So why is the US so pro Israel? The current debate about the UN resolution - why is the US demanding the language be watered down to keep Netanyahu happy - for goodness sake the USA is the most powerful country in the world.
genuinely don’t get it. This isn’t a goading question I just scratch my head at the whole thing (when not feeling utter despair at the terrible suffering in the world).

@EasterIssland but they do provide something. A safe haven in a sea of nothing.

Instead or expecting more from Israel you could ask for anything of the surrounding states? Anything at all.

A safe haven from what and for whom?

A sea of nothingness? Does the ‘nothingness’ include Jordan, Egypt? What do you mean by ‘nothingness’ exactly?

the fundamentalist Christians are a niche group, who hold little sway;

I disagree with this. Religion is significant in the US. 140 million are protestant, about 60 plus are Catholic with lots of Evagelicals, Baptists also in the mix. They vote. With the exception of Trump all contenders for the presidency in the US need to declare for God.

Kennedy was the first Catholic elected. There has never been a Jew and it is unlikely that a Jewish man (it will definately never be a woman) could win the pesidency. That being said I think it woud be more controversial for a contender to be an atheist than a Jew.

If we think about it the modern itteration of the US was founded by and for religious extremists. It still drives a lot - look at the abortion debate.

Yes, the US is more religious and actively Christian than Europe. But that is a long way from believing the “rapture” will soon be upon us.

@FOJN ok name a country in the region with ANY genuine rights for women and LGBT?

Why do I need to do that? I made no claims about equality in other countries in the region.

I pointed out that the claim that everyone in Israel has equal rights is false.

You could even make the argument that secular/agnostic/atheist citizens are discriminated against because only religious wedding ceremonies are recognised. There is no such thing as a civil ceremony which provides a legally recognised marriage.

Don’t understand how anyone could support Israel

I’m criticising a comment from another poster saying Israel provides equal rights to women and lgbt. No they don’t provide equal rights. The poster was talking about Israel and that’s who I’m talking about.

stomachamaleon · 26/12/2023 18:17

@FOJN right ok. Point made.

What photojournalist? Why not name them?
And it's a picture of a tank turfing up ground?
Not very verifiable?

Can we just say what we like now with no facts? No evidence?

Massive double standard.

stomachamaleon · 26/12/2023 19:51

@Parker231 the IDF did say they had detained hundreds of Hamas fighters though. www.timesofisrael.com/troops-kill-dozens-of-hamas-gunmen-in-north-gaza-idf-says-200-arrested-in-past-week/

Israel controls all access to Gaza as yu know.

They will not allow any witnesses in.

With that in mind people try to collate as best they can.

Any evidence on that besides what the IDF said?

We need more than that.

It's one thing to disagree with a country's policy on various topics and quite another to write off an entire nation like that, especially one that's one of the few successful countries in the region.

How many times in the past year has the UN condemned Israel .. 15 times in 2022. Hundreds of times in the past few years.

How many times has the UN condemned hamas, the Palestineauthority... 0 times

PROBLEMS IN Syria 1 , other various shit holes of human atrocity. Condemned once each .. various countries with 1 condemnation

The UN .... wouldn't trust them to call out other atrocities in Syria, Dafur, Yemen, Iran etc.... only Israel is a problem to them

Any reason why you’ve directed your comment only at me and not at another poster as well that has written a similar comment about other countries few comments before mine ?

Honestly I skim read the thread and missed it.
It's not acceptable to write off entire countries with different people, different traditions, different political positions, different ethnicities and religions and decide the whole country is awful.

This is overt racism and it's thriving on mumsnet at the moment.

Thereissomelight · 26/12/2023 22:41

Some nasty racists about. Entirely missing the point that so many of these countries are poor and unstable because of having been colonised and invaded and the subject of many wars. They’ll be saying in five years that Gaza is a shithole because the Gazans are too lazy and disorganised to build proper homes and universities and airports.

If you’re unlucky enough to have been born in a country which is used to fight wealthier countries’ proxy wars then yes, you’ll live in a poor, unstable country with uneducated, traumatised, radicalised people. The sort of places that some in those same wealthier countries write off as a shithole.
