This is a fact and everybody knows it but it still feels so refreshing to hear it said by one of the leaders of the west. And it's not just words:

Neither Shannon Airport, nor any other Irish airport, is being used by the US military to support Israel.

EU ‘double standards’ on Israel and Palestine - Varadkar

Varadkar raises concerns about EU ‘double standards’ on Israel and Palestine

The Irish premier also said neither Shannon Airport, nor any other Irish airport, was being used by the US military to support Israel.

There’s been a lot of misinformation online about Ireland with a huge amount of propaganda to paint Ireland as anti semitic for not participating in WW2. As several people pointed out a large number of Irish fought for the British army in world war 2 - Ireland did not participate for the same reason it did not participate in any war since it gained independence. The Irish constitution has neutrality written into it - no government can send the Irish army into war which is also why we can’t join Nato. There would have to be a referendum to get the constitution rewritten.

It has been a topic of much debate in the past with some people believing we should remove it from the constitution, join Nato etc and others arguing that because we are such a small country our neutrality is the safer choice. The Irish army have worked abroad as peace keepers.

This is all true. It would be completely wrong to paint Ireland as anti semitic . (De Valera though ? ..)

The situation in Gaza is unbearable. I hope the Palestinians are free of Hamas and the Israelis are free of Netanyahu. I hope the hostages are freed and the no more Palestinians are killed or wounded or made homeless. Anyone who doesn’t want all these things is a monster.
i just think a ceasefire is difficult until the threat of a reoccurrence of October 7th is reduced .
Hamas have made it clear they will keep attacking.

@Limeandsodaontherocks You really haven't a clue, as demonstrated in your flurry of posts of absolute nonsense.

Try opening a history book that goes back further than the 1970s and claim with a straight face that Ireland hasn't been terrorised by the English.

Ever heard of the Black and Tans?
The war of independence?
The famine?

I'm sure we did all that to ourselves 🙄

Roste · 20/11/2023 16:52

You might want to check with Irish people living in Ireland before you go lauding Clare Daly as representative of our opinions.
It would take an awfully long time . But seriously, I’m interested in understanding why you feel this way, can you explain.

I’ve never claimed Ireland wasn’t terrorised by England . I know about all the things you’ve mentioned. ( I had a relative executed by the British in the war of independence. )

Thank you @Ohlalalalala . I have to admire your persistence with these threads. I read them all but seeing the same posters (and a few others ) constantly trying to derail threads by attempting to dehumanise Palestinians shows them for who they really are. Instead of gathering support for their own cause they have the opposite effect.
Irish people can empathise with the Palestinian people. There are very strong bonds even today, for example between the Bloody Sunday families in Derry and Palestinians.
During An Gorta Mór over a million people died from starvation while over 2 million were forced to leave Ireland. There are reminders of that all over Ireland with abandoned villages and small houses... The land was 'grabbed' throughout Irish history by big landlords some of whose descendants, admittedly few, still remain to this day. So there is a common bond even though some might try to deny it.

Thanks so much @ColadhSamh. I agree completely with what you said.

As I once said in one of my threads, the purpose of my posting is trying to inform the uninformed, correct the misinformed and debunk the myths/ propaganda/ hasbara seeking to dehumanise Palestinians and silence their plight.

I've been on Mumsnet for a long time and thought I've seen it all, but oh boy was I wrong! The least I can say is that posting in this section has been a real eye opener.

May justice for Palestinians and any other persecuted people prevail.

To be silent is to be complicit.

Proud to be Irish. And I stand with the many Jews who are against the ethnic cleansing and genocide of the Palestinians

Fellow Irish person here and fully supportive of the innocent Palestinian people who are being slaughtered.

Clare Daly is not a good example, she's far too close to Russia and has made some comments on the war that are extremely unpopular.

Most Southern Irish have no experience at all of murdering neighbours. It’s those in the north who have experienced this - on both sides of the divide.

You posted this gem @Limeandsodaontherocks - it's there in black and white.

So much wrong in those two sentences.

Ok . I did say “ most have not experienced murderous neighbours “
And I am talking about those living now as opposed to a century ago.
But if you say many Irish ( from the South- not the north) , currently living , have themselves experienced murderous neighbours ( ie the Brits) I will take your word for it. The Black and Tans were a long time ago. The Irish civil war was a long time ago.
And my family’s experience is obviously different.
And maybe we should focus on the people suffering now 🤔

Cloie · 20/11/2023 17:26

@Limeandsodaontherocks De Valera is a can of worms - who knows - I would say probably anti semitic. Condolences to Hitler but then was commemorated by the Irish Jewish community for his work with the community after the war. He wasn’t a great person - wealth and power were a big motivator for him!

I don't live in Ireland but being unpopular does not mean she is wrong

War of Independence and black and tans were in the early 1920s so after WW1 and 20 years before WW2 so not as long ago as you maybe think it was.

I do know my history dates . And a hundred years ago is quite a long time .

Is there a typo in the title of this thread?

Ohlalalalala · 20/11/2023 18:09

This thread was meant to say thank you to Ireland for its stance on Palestine. Not to debate history and smear an entire people.

To get back on track, here's a very powerful speech by Nada Abu Tarbush, Palestine UN Representative:

"Never again is NOW!" | Palestine's UN Rep. Nada Abu Tarbush EXPOSES Israel's War Crimes in Gaza

  1. I don’t remember anyone smearing an entire people?

Im not saying I don’t want a ceasefire-of course that must be the aim. But is a ceasefire possible when Hamas say they will continue to attack?

Let's hope the various protests and marches in the UK force the PM to actually say what the people want and call for a ceasefire. We could do with taking a leaf out of Ireland's book.

Hamas is just an excuse. The Palestinians' suffering did not start on October 7th.
