This is a fact and everybody knows it but it still feels so refreshing to hear it said by one of the leaders of the west. And it's not just words:

Neither Shannon Airport, nor any other Irish airport, is being used by the US military to support Israel.

EU ‘double standards’ on Israel and Palestine - Varadkar

Varadkar raises concerns about EU ‘double standards’ on Israel and Palestine

The Irish premier also said neither Shannon Airport, nor any other Irish airport, was being used by the US military to support Israel.

Ireland has often had an interesting position in international relations - neutral in WWII. Ireland has not joined NATO even though presumably NATO might protect it if Europe were under attack.

Ireland will have its own reasons for its stances on particular issues as a sovereign state. That does not mean we in the UK agree with its position.

This thread is about Ireland , not uk.

Based on the thread title and the topic it's in, I'd say it's about the conflict in the middle east.

Indeed but it’s about Ireland’s opinion about the conflict in the Middle East not about uks

I, in the UK, agree with its position wholeheartedly 🇮🇪 ❤️

I wish we had some other leaders instead if the spineless hypocritical current ones.

"During World War II, Ireland was now officially neutral and independent from the UK. However, over 80,000 Irish-born men and women (north and south) joined the British armed forces, with between 5,000 and 10,000 being killed during the conflict."

What's that to do with my OP?

Thousands of Irish soldiers died in WW2, do try not to be so ignorant and divisive.

My grand uncle (great uncle) was a conscripted American sailor having emigrated in the early 30’s and fought in the pacific.
Two of his sisters worked in armaments factories in Bristol.

I would love to know who you think you’re including in that “We” and how it matches the reality of who the Allies actually were.

Sausagenbacon · 19/11/2023 20:06

So what does it mean to you that they remained neutral? Apart from a similar disregard of Jewish lives a century later

Roste · 19/11/2023 20:16

@Ohlalalalala , yes well done Ireland 🇮🇪 🫶
I’ve been particularly impressed with Clare Daly MEP , some brilliant speeches and a stark contrast to the amoral, sycophantic leadership of the U.K.

Oh yes; she's absolutely brilliant and says it as it is. 👏 👏 👏

Yes. Maybe my uncle’s RAF medals were awarded for cowardice🤔
I’m trying to follow your train of thought here-it seems that you are making a sweeping anti- Irish remark to intimate that Ireland is an anti- Semitic country.
The calls for a ceasefire from across the Irish political spectrum , which include both the prime minister and head of state, in your opinion, lack validity because Ireland was militarily neutral in WWW2.
With all respect this is not a particularly coherent argument and while you are entitled to voice your opinion, you must appreciate that it may be interpreted as being offensive.

Ireland was in a very difficult position during world war 2. We had only gained independence from Britain 20 years before the start of world war 2. We were building a country, we didn't have huge military. Our relations with the UK were strained understandably and we were still hopeful we would get the 6 counties back. As others have mentioned many Irish people fought in the British army and we also supported the allies so they could land planes refuel etc. pretty poor bringing up our position in WW2 tbh. We are not a member of NATO because of our neutral position but also very unlikely to be threatened or invaded unless the UK are planning another go 🙄. The world could do with more Ireland's in my opinion.
Apologies for derailing the thread but this comment hit a nerve.

Well done Ireland for the position you are taking. Our ex president Mary Robinson has been having a go at the Americans as well

Good for Ireland. At least one country has integrity.

Indeed. Imagine if the rest of Europe did an Ireland and Switzerland. Someone had to fight to keep Europe free. Well at least they benefit from that now.

Ohlalalalala · 19/11/2023 21:41

Could you please stop with the thread derail. We are talking about now. 2023. WWII has no relevance here. Why attack Ireland's history because they are saying the truth and siding with Palestine? Stop the smearing please.

Sorry @Kindatired and @Dulra and any other Irish pps here for the offensive innuendos posted on this thread.

I was very impressed by Mary Lou MacDonald’s speeches as well. On October 18th and a few days ago.

PS: Ireland was no more ‘neutral’ during WWII than the U.K. are being neutral for the war in Ukraine. They didn’t have the resources to formally declare war on Germany, so they supported the powers that could declare war by providing material, weapons and soldiers.
