"Fact or Fiction: Israel needs fake nurses to justify killing Gaza babies" (Opinion Piece)

I posted this article earlier on a thread about misinformation, but thought it important enough to warrant having its own thread as it can help people not familiar with media studies and the intricacies of information warfare to understand better the current events.

It's a very interesting, long and detailed analysis by the academic Dr Marc Owen Jones, about what's happening right now in Gaza.

I find that the author explains excellently well how Israel is trying to keep control of the false narrative regarding Gaza and Palestine in general. I urge anyone interested to read the whole piece as I copied parts only of the analysis.

May I kindly ask anyone not to derail the thread and to keep the discussion respectful. Please report any offensive posts to @MNHQ.

Here are some excerpts (highlights mine):

Israel knows it risks losing global support over its slaughter of children. So it’s turning to social media disinformation that’s sloppy but often effective.

In Gaza, a child is killed every 10 minutes. Since October 7, Israel has killed more than 4,000 children. Now, premature babies at Gaza’s al-Shifa Hospital are dying because the institution is out of power after over a month of Israel’s siege, and so is unable to operate incubators.

Israel knows it risks losing international support for its ongoing slaughter of children.

As a result, Israel’s propaganda and disinformation machine is finding new ways to justify the killing of children and the bombing of medical facilities.

Usually, Israel’s first response to accusations of atrocities is denial. When that fails, the second strategy is to blame Hamas or other Palestinian armed groups for Palestinian deaths.

It hasn’t given up on those strategies, but is also trying to directly link Palestinian children to Hamas, and thereby seek to portray them – and the places where they are sheltering – as legitimate targets.

I don’t understand why we are demonstrating, remonstrating, beating our breast about this war and it’s atrocities more than any other war.

Because our government have stated that they support the invasion of Gaza, they support war. That's why I am angry. I do not support war. Not in my name.

Also, the people of Gaza are trapped - they cannot flee. In almost all other wars people can run away from the horror. In Gaza they are kettled and being forcibly abused in the most horrific way. There is no escape.

I watch because I will bear witness. I refuse to look away when fellow humans are being tortured. I refuse to pretend it's not happening. I refuse to justify it with the acts of a few extremists. If you blow a child's limbs off with a bomb - you did it - not Hamas.

It sickens and haunts me - and so it should. The world should be forced to acknowledge what Israel are doing to human beings. A government, not a terrorist cell - a government. It's sick.

This exactly…the world is waking up to the lies and atrocities being done not only in Gaza but in the West Bank as well. There’s an awful lot that will come out from this and I hope they all end up in The Hague. I also wonder how on earth Hamas managed to break through the most secure border in the world with such ease, where were the IDF for so many many hours, why didn’t they listen to intelligence they were given three weeks earlier ? It’s all not sitting right to me, the truth will come out, but sadly not until many more innocent children have lost their lives, families and homes.

I won’t be silenced , intimidated , or made to feel hysterical or anti Semitic for speaking up.

i won’t stay quiet while premature babies are slowly dying with each passing day , and anyone fine with that is devoid of any empathy.

Questioning why are we watching the atrocities is a way of silencing those of us against the on going massacres in Gaza . Belittling those who chose to march for the Palestinian people is Silencing the truth , calling anyone condemning the atrocities committed by the Israeli Government anti Semitic is silencing the truth.

We owe it to these innocent voiceless people to speak and if it wasn’t for the handful of freelance reporters we wouldn’t know what’s going on there.

What a strange place for IDF to set up a military base. Inside the very hospital they tried to convince the world they were bombing as it was the Hamas HQ.

Idiots, liars, murderers.

What gets me is the west is up and arms with even the idea that Hamas uses the hospitals (with no untampered evidence of that yet) but Israel can set up a military command centre openly and the likes of UK government and US government say nothing

They can try to silence us but they'll fail at doing so.

Yes exactly! What the hell are they playing at and why aren't the West and America rioting?

They threw out the doctors, the sick and the dying so they could put the kettle on and set up sniper towers.
