Thats so true @Ohlalalalala . Almost every politician has seen whats been going on in Gaza and wondering 'but how does this play out for me?'. Its just despicable. I always wondered how the nazis managed to kill millions of people and no one stopped them. I can understand it more now. People at the top are at the top as they are naturally self serving. In other words they aren't nice people. And they always do what suits them first.

How does Cameron become a minister if he's not an MP?
You may wonder how it's possible for David Cameron to become a secretary of state.

In short, he'd have to be sworn into the House of Lords - the upper house of the UK Parliament - as a matter of urgency.

A former prime minister has re-entered government before.

Alec Douglas-Home - Conservative PM from 1963 to 1964 - came back as Ted Heath's foreign secretary, serving from 1970 to 1974.

He, though, was an MP when returning to government.

I didn't realise David Cameron was still an MP? Can't believe he's coming back!

He isn’t. Apparently it’s problematic that he’s not an mp!

I've learnt something this morning. Member of the House of Lords can be cabinet members. I don't think this is acceptable, we don't elect them. I do think there is some merit to an unelected second chamber but only to provide checks and balances to the elected chamber.

I'm glad SB has been sacked. I'm not usually in favour of cabinet members being sacked for saying unpopular or controversial things but her recent statements about the protest on Saturday were deliberately inflammatory and that is unacceptable behaviour for a government minister.

Passepartoute · 13/11/2023 10:03

Presumably if Cameron becomes Foreign Secretary they still need someone pretty heavyweight to be Foreign Office spokesman in the Commons.

Ohlalalalala · 13/11/2023 10:03

David Cameron is appointed Foreign Secretary.

Wasn't Lord Frost a minister without being elected as an MP.

Being allowed constitutionally doesn't make it ok.

I am also in favour of a second House as a check and balance (although I would like it to be made up of a more representative sample).

But shoehorning unelected people into the top tiers of the Government is completely unacceptable. I think this 'rule' needs changing...

I am happy Suella and her evilness has gone though.

He was elevated to the House of Lords as a life peer in 2020. Hence Lord title. It's not very well-known but PMs can choose ministers from the House of Lords!

Oh this is so hopeful to hear, it has bought tears to my eyes. Maybe maybe it’s happening in my lifetime.

What's happening in your lifetime?

From BBC we learn that Cameron himself made someone a Lord to get them into government.

We know that David Cameron - now Lord Cameron - has been given "the dignity of a Barony of the United Kingdom" for life.

In short, that means he's in the House of Lords - the upper house of the UK Parliament.

In order to hold a position in government, people generally sit in either the House of Commons as an MP or the Lords as a peer.

Back in 2015, while prime minister, Cameron was forced to defend his decision to give Andrew Dunlop - a former adviser - a peerage so he could make him a minister at the Scotland Office.

Back then, the Scottish Nationalist Party described Dunlop's appointment and the peerage as "scandalous".

It also accused Cameron of "resorting to House of Lords ennoblement to govern Scotland".

@BelleHathor for me, as for so many others, Sunak has already lost the little credibility he had. So whatever he does, whoever he appoints, he has no credibility or any political acumen.

You are not wrong about his political acumen. He is a walking example of how not to do politics, every decision he makes is poor.

Why?
We don't have even a flyweight being Prime Minister, so why would the FO need a heavyweight?

It's too little too late; Gaza is destroyed and we all witnessed a genocide.

The hypocritical "leaders" are just concerned about the optics as you put it. They don't think in terms of morality and sanctity of human life but in terms of election and vote and if the thousands being murdered daily impacts negatively or not on their political advancement. Disgusting.

100%. It's all about holding onto their seats rather than genuine care for people

By talking sense, does that include the times last week she urged the Met Police Commisioner to break the law?
