Gets my vote. Probably won’t change anything.

Shouldimove · 06/11/2023 16:26

I wish they would share information on how to approach this with employers. I work for a private company, I've never striked in my life.

If we want people to take part, more information and support is needed!

biscuitnut · 06/11/2023 16:31

Sorry am I being thick or something but what the hell will that achieve? Do you think we live in the old colonial days where Britain gets to tell the rest of the world what to do? You really think Israel will stop bombing because some middle class teacher in London stays at home. Oooh that will make them think won’t it!! They won’t give a shit you silly buggers 😂 Nobody is striking for Gaza. We live in England, it’s not our war.

Firebug007 · 06/11/2023 16:34

This would be an illegal strike, anyone who doesn't go to work and tries to give this as a reason will probably lose their jobs. Also considering this is all happening in another country and not under the UK jurisdiction it would make absolutely no difference to anything but you crack on with your batshit idea hon 🥱🤦‍♂️

It is a lot of ours war though. And turning a blind eye to genocide isn't something that sits right with hopefully a very large proportion of people.

It's a message. By ignoring everything and saying 'what good will it do' we are doing nothing. And, imo, that is not okay. Just my opinion.

Xil · 06/11/2023 16:36

You can't just decide you're going on strike because you want to.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 06/11/2023 16:36

Oh FFS.

Don't approach this with your employer you'll be laughed out of the office! Here's what the law says https://www.acas.org.uk/strikes-and-industrial-action#:~:text=To%20take%20official%20action%2C%20trade,of%20a%20strike%2C%20or%20both.

The law on industrial action - Strikes and industrial action - Acas

The different types of official and unofficial action, who can take part, balloting rules and employee rights under industrial action law.

biscuitnut · 06/11/2023 16:37

@Firebug007 I am howling! What next, strike for Ukraine perhaps? Fuck all do with us but damn it I want a day off and we all know when British postmen stop work the world absolutely shits itself.

Tigerteal · 06/11/2023 16:37

@biscuitnut this war was created by England so yes, England is responsible

What do you do for living?

biscuitnut · 06/11/2023 16:40

@Shouldimove what you want to do is something that will make YOU feel better. A day off from work doesn’t really help victims of war. Join the Red Cross if you want to help.

This excellent article explains some of the background and, importantly, why what is happening in Gaza is not a genocide

“In a further racist twist, Jews are now accused of the very crimes they themselves have suffered. Hence the constant claim of a “genocide” when no genocide has taken place or been intended. Israel, with Egypt, has imposed a blockade on Gaza since Hamas took over, and has periodically bombarded the Strip in retaliation for regular rocket attacks. After more than 4,000 rockets were fired by Hamas and its allies into Israel, the 2014 Gaza War resulted in more than 2,000 Palestinian deaths. More than 7,000 Palestinians, including many children, have died so far in this war, according to Hamas. This is a tragedy—but this is not a genocide, a word that has now been so devalued by its metaphorical abuse that it has become meaningless.”

An earthquake is a tragedy. A hurricane is a tragedy. I don't think tragedy really fits the cold, calculated killing of 10,000 people in a month. Massacre maybe? Mass slaughter maybe?

Then what word do we use for starving 2.2million people of water, food and aid? Attempted genocide? Because again this isn't some random tragedy, this is a cold, calculated move that will result in mass killing.

People are only aware of this genocide because it sells newspapers. The others didn't make the popular cut eh

It's probably because Israel is presented as being similar to the west in that it's a democracy and we helped set it up.

Uk and wst overall caused many messes around the world.
Everything is about what news decide is popular and sells. You can have 3 new wars, 5 natural disasters at the same time and people will only read about 2, not even the biggest ones, but the ones guessed as big news clicks.

And do you think "helped set it up" still means "they should listen to us"? They don't have to

fireworksmyass · 06/11/2023 17:26

This is a terrible situation where our country has caused this and now is facilitating it.

By the way, you don't need articles to tell you if this is a genocide or not just look at the dictionary and see what the word genocide means and that is exactly what is happening right now.

Flopsythebunny · 06/11/2023 17:26

Batshit!
