Sorry but has anyone seen the furore surrounding this?

Is it just me or is this getting ridiculous. So we arent allowed to use red, green and silver colours as it's anti palastine? FFS the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

The protestors are making themselves look like idiots.

For anyone who hadnt seen M&S had shared an image showing glam lady, gold tree and decorations. In the fireplace are a traditional green, red and silver paper hat. It's meant to show not everyone wants to wear paper hats and Christmas can be about glitz and glam. Protestors are claiming they are burning the Palestinian flag

It’s ridiculous, but they have bowed down to the minority. And they will be scared of some form of retaliation.

OutOfSyncWithReality · 06/11/2023 09:39

I heard about this before I saw the advert. It's such a non-issue in some ways really but I can understand this is a politically sensitive time. It does no harm to remove the imagery.

It's totally ridiculous not least because the advert would have been scripted and recorded way before the conflict started. Then again the whole bloody conflict is ridiculous, it's such a terrible waste of life, nothing more dangerous than the arrogance of the human ego.

MoggyP · 06/11/2023 10:06

I doubt very much it was created with the Palestinian flag in mind (because of timeline)

But a non-deliberate insult is still an insult

So M&S should take it on the chin, just as every other campaign that is axed, or programmed that is pulled/delayed, because sometimes events in the real world make some things unfit for broadcast

Pandering to idiots harms society by validating nonsense and setting a precedent for future idiot-pandering.

How hard is it to say: "The advert was conceived of X months ago and filmed Y months ago. The coloured paper hats represent coloured paper hats."

Good God! Where will this end?

Realistically anyone can take offence with anything such is the power of imagery interpretation!
Some people just have to much time on their hands!

Hmm, I‘m torn on this one… On the one hand I agree with PP I’ve quoted. I’ve seen people coming up with more and more ridiculous reasons to be offended in those recent years and I don’t think that pandering to them is the way forward.
On the other hand, when I googled said M&S ad and came across a picture of the red, green and silver hats in the fire place, they did resemble the Palestinian flag (due to the current events, I doubt I would have thought of it a year ago).
That said, I only saw that one picture and not the whole ad - I can imagine that within the context of the ad the flag association might be less obvious.

Totally agree with this. M&S should’ve said it’s staying, was filmed before the conflict. We’re in a spineless world.

SomeCatFromJapan · 06/11/2023 16:36

The fact that anyone looked at the advert and took that from it is deeply paranoid and deranged. M&S should have told them to swivel.
