Linked to all of this is the point that the Israeli govt helped create Hamas and also fund it.

"What you might not know is that this same group was actually created in part by Israel itself. While it may sound like a conspiracy theory, it’s actually a well-documented, open secret that Israel has helped finance and prop up Hamas for years.

“We need to tell the truth,” Israeli major general Gershon Hacohen, an associate of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said in a 2019 TV interview. “Netanyahu’s strategy is to prevent the option of two states, so he is turning Hamas into his closest partner. Openly Hamas is an enemy. Covertly, it’s an ally.”

How Israel helped prop up Hamas for decades | AnalystNews

What is Hamas, and why has Israel deliberately enabled its existence for years?

Great article by HF thank you. 'Are you on glue?' That's how I feel.

One death doesn't justify 10, 20 or 100. Its disproportionate.

Weefreetiffany · 02/11/2023 17:11

Hadley talking sense as usual. I was surprised when the first sisters uncut Palestine protest was a joint trans rights protest because “nobodies free until we’re all free” thing. It was utterly bizarre and strange to equate the two. Never mind what they do to lgbt people under Hamas. Just the trans narcs making it all about them while actual women and children get bombed to hell. She’s right that they seem to only care about looking right on and not engaging their brains beyond that.

So what's a proportionate response? I've said this before and I'll say it again - in 2011 Israel traded 1027 prisoners for one Israeli soldier. It was considered reasonable and proportionate by the world. So for every Israeli killed I guess Israel can kill 1027 without anyone kicking up a fuss?

Proportionality doesn't make sense in this situation. It really doesn't.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 02/11/2023 17:35

Well I think it does. We don't need to go this far and practically start a world war. We just don't. Israel has gone that far because it has a very right wing leader, who would go further than his predecessors. He's an idiot. But I dont need to justify my opinion; I'm just sharing it, as we were asked.

That's fine, I wasn't really asking you to justify yourself. Just wanted to explain that it's not quite as straightforward.

Hopefully all the hostages can be released soon and all this suffering in Gaza can end.

(And I agree, Netanyahu is an idiot)

Lottapianos · 02/11/2023 17:44

She always has a thoughtful, compassionate take on every issue. She's absolutely right that a ceasefire was in place until Hamas wrecked it on 7 October. What are Israel supposed to do, just sacrifice those 200 hostages and sit on their hands?

Stomacharmeleon · 02/11/2023 17:58

Brilliant article and so true.
I often think I must have missed the emboldened threads berating genocide on here pre October 7th or talking about the ills of Netanyahu.

It's a very difficult read as it describes the torture that occurred in the initial Hamas attack. Absolute sadistic evil.

Free the hostages.

Prrambulate · 02/11/2023 18:19

Indeed. And conversely, think how lucky the Gazans are the people slaughtering them are progressive and liberal in their political leanings. Imagine if the IDF was misogynistic? That would be truly terrible for Palestinians.

what part of "a ceasefire was in place until Hamas wrecked it on 7 October" don't you get?

@Prrambulate I would still rather IDF that a terrorist organisation that hides leaders of said organisation and hostages under a refugee camp.

Decorhate · 02/11/2023 18:43

I may be mistaken but It think this article has been edited since it was first published as I’m sure when I read it yesterday it implied the Israeli response was simply defending their country, with the implication it was justified. Glad that has been removed.
