M&S Christmas ad

M&S now deleted Christmas ad has been heavily criticised for burning hats in the colour of the Palestine flag and for the reflection of a blue and white flame burning in the eye of a smirking Sophie Ellis-Baxter.

Lots of people are boycotting M&S for the ‘dark and twisted’ post supposedly celebrating the genocide of Palestine even though M&S say it was filmed before the 7th October attack from Hamas, pointing out the founder of M&S as being a Zionist.

It does seem to be very much a coincidence?

Apologies if this has been posted already

I mean don't they film these ads in July or something? And I Woodings even have noticed. The colours of the Palestinian flag are also traditionally the colours of Christmas-and the blue is just showcasing their eye make up range. People will read anything into anything it seems to me!

SharonEllis · 02/11/2023 09:16

Absolute nonsense. The palestinian flag is red, green, white & black. The hats are christmas colours red, green & silver. The blue eye shadow conspiracy theory is too nonsensical to even discuss.

This is very clear antisemitism because M&S started as a Jewish company.

It does reveal the conspiracist frame of mind of many people though.

QueefofSheena · 02/11/2023 09:17

I saw their justification post on Instagram this morning, saying it was an outtake from the filming in August. I don't think it flies as the hats in the ad are metallic, the fire post looks hastily cobbled together and isn't in the same style, so I call bullshit.

I was coming on to say the same.

Does this also mean we can no longer display red, green and white lights on trees or other decorations.

But why would they? What do they gain from the negative pr? If they wanted to make a statement, why go to these lengths to try and subtly do it? I don't understand what people think the thought process would be for a huge company like M&S to decide to put out something so controversial, but to do it in a really (REALLY) subtle almost non existent way.
It's conspiracy theory nonsense.

Next people will be criticising the use of the word Christmas because it has some of the same letters as Hamas.

ColleenDonaghy · 02/11/2023 10:13

Seems very obviously like an unfortunate coincidence to me.

awaynboilyurheid · 02/11/2023 10:23

The hate M and S are getting on instagram is horrible, red and green are festive colours, it’s clearly antisemitism .
Not that the conspiracy nutters want to close all Shops owned by Jewish people because that could never happen ….oh wait

Shhhhivegotasecret · 02/11/2023 17:06

This is beyond ridiculous - if ads are airing now they would have been shot months ago. It’s so ludicrous it’s laughable.
oh and if we want to talk about companies with Jewish founders - there is a long list, entrepreneurship comes when persecution has meant there is nothing else to do but make your own luck.. I think Tesco also had Jewish founders amongst many many others..

OhHelloTheres · 02/11/2023 17:31

This reminds me of my Liverpool days where most Saturdays the pro-Palestinians on Bold Street would march down to M&S to demonstrate 🙃 Because obviously M&S are responsible for Israel's actions. Utterly pathetic.

SomeCatFromJapan · 02/11/2023 17:33

This is insane levels of paranoia but doesn't surprise me, given that there was an anti-Israeli demo targetting the M&S in Glasgow before the ad furore, because M&S was founded by a Jewish person.

SparkleFromWithin · 03/11/2023 00:53

Conspiracy theories?? Nutters? Anti semitism??

Have you SEEN the state of Gaza lately?

It's burning, and it can be seen burning from the sky.

This ad was at its very best in extremely poor taste and tone deaf. By a bunch of washed up has-beens that nobody can barely recognise.

And for the record, people are not boycotting M&S or protesting outside M&S because it's Jewish.

They're doing it because M&S sells millions of pounds worth of Israeli goods. Goods that bring them profits so they can buy phosphorus white gas and give Palestinian babies 4th degree burns and blind them for life. Oh I'm sorry, has the bbc not been telling you about these illegal acts of Israel ? Try following a Gaza journalist on social media to get first hand news maybe then and opening your minds just a little bit beyond mainstream media ?

So People boycott these 'Jewish' stores because they can't do anything else beyond helplessly watch babies being butchered, hear about Gazan mothers having c sections without aneasthetic, and seeing in horror as fathers carry their babies remains in carrier bags. Boycotting is the little bit of power they can take back from these animals who are hell bent on annihilating an entire nation.

Just remember all this when sniggering at nutter conspiracy theorists will you.

But obviously this being mumsnet you all have to defend m&s because it's the only way you can prove how* middle class* you all are - even if that means turning a blind eye to blatant genocide and ethnic cleansing.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 03/11/2023 02:04

It's bloody ridiculous. People are insane.
One lot are bitching because there aren't enough white people in it and they are burning Christmas cards

Another lot are complaining about the colour of the paper hats. It took me ages to work out why people were complaining. As someone pointed out it's not the only flag in those colours.

Next people will be criticising the use of the word Christmas because it has some of the same letters as Hamas.

Oh they already are! It's insanity.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 03/11/2023 02:10

This ad was at its very best in extremely poor taste and tone deaf.

The ad has absolutely nothing to do with the current conflict and therefore cannot be either of those things.

Smurfmurf · 03/11/2023 06:34

Waitrose is quite entertaining.

The ad is not in bad taste, people are actively reading things into it that aren't there.

No one is denying what's happening in Gaza. We're denying this ad has anything to do with it.

It's paranoia.

RedPinkPhoneThing · 03/11/2023 07:18

People are mad and love to feel outraged. This ad was produced well before Hamas' disgusting inhumane sadistic attack on Israel so has nothing to do with the Middle East.

Green777 · 03/11/2023 07:25

The ad is in terrible taste.

Even if it were filmed months before there’s no way it should have been aired, for the use of colours is significant and was bound to cause upset due to being coincidentally showing the burning of the colours of Palestine with the glint of blue and white burning in the actress’ eye.

Lots are saying people falling over themselves to be offended by the supposed subliminal message, to me it seems the opposite.

People are falling over themselves to not see how this may offend those who are in solidarity with the civilians in Palestine, most of the commenters here are clearly not.

@RedPinkPhoneThing

Before Hamas’ sadistic attack but not before many attacks on the people of Palestine.

Since then, there’s been another sadistic attack on a much much larger scale but I doubt you’re too concerned about that one.

Oliotya · 03/11/2023 07:43

Deliberate or not, it shouldn't have been aired. In very poor taste. The colours and symbolism aren't exactly subtle, and I can't quite believe nobody picked up on it before.

RedPinkPhoneThing · 03/11/2023 07:45

I am still trying to come to terms with the perverted atrocities Hamas committed but I'm struggling. They killed a baby by baking the baby in an oven letting the baby die a prolonged painful death. A part of the world's humanity died when this happened. Please don't equate what Israel is doing with the barbaric actions of Hamas, it only betrays your levels of ignorance. But then this thread was never posted in good faith, was it? You are trying to stir up division and hate. You are part of the problem and continuation of the circle of violence, not part of a constructive peace process.

I agree with this. It was obviously a shit-stirring post. But I guess at least these folks seeing 'coincidence' everywhere will be busy now organising demos for the 1.7 million Afghans being deported from Pakistan back to the hands if the Taliban......
Oh, wait.....

OhHelloTheres · 03/11/2023 07:53

@Green777
So when you think of Christmas, what are the top five colours you'd think of?

Dulra · 03/11/2023 08:07

I was reading news articles in Ireland yesterday criticising the ad because they were burning the Irish tricolour so it looks like M&S are unintentionally offending a lot of people!
Ads been pulled anyway hopefully they can relaunch with offending piece taken out it was a clever ad and probably cost a fortune

Droppit · 03/11/2023 08:37

Jeez they're just Christmas hats in typical colours in an ad. Why must everything be overanalyzed?

Maybe it would be best if we don't celebrate Christmas at all because it's bound to show an allegiance to one side 🙄
