Conflict in the Middle East

This much we can agree on!

Another attempt at - to unashamedly quote Tracy Chapman: "if not now, then WHEN?"

Can we please have a thread about things we can all actually subscribe to? Respectful disagreements welcome! Bold proposals welcome!

I shall start:

  1. All children are innocent and inherently deserve our compassion, our advocacy, our voices - whoever and whereever they are - on the grounds that they are too young to be punished for whatever their parents or grandparents have done!
  2. Ordinary people - regardless of their political opinions - must not be punished for the actions of their leaders unless they have demonstrably and personally engaged in activity that supports the same (a.k.a. "I would prefer not to be punished for what Rishi says and does!").
  3. Antisemitism is categorically wrong!
  4. Islamophobia is categorically wrong"
  5. Anti-Palestinianism is categorically wrong!

You don't make peace treaties with terrorists?

Sorry this is the one I can't agree. Both Nelson Mandela and Daniel Ortega went on to democratically lead their countries after having been called terrorists by many people. Many people called terrorists have done less wrong than the armies and police forces in the countries they were from.

All the others I think I can get behind.

Mine is: Complicated geopolitical and historical conflicts with roots hundreds (thousands) of years in the making can't be reduced to 'goodies' and 'baddies'. Everyone who fights has a reason to fight that makes sense to them. Talking about those reasons ISN'T excusing them.

Noicant · 31/10/2023 04:07

A 2 state solution is the only path to peace where both countries can feel secure and safe.

Ruminate2much · 31/10/2023 06:06

Animals are innocent, and it's heartbreaking that they are often victims of human wars 😔

mids2019 · 31/10/2023 06:10

Anti semitiism is wrong and marched which allow calling for the session of the state of Israel should be wrong or at least policed better

Mammillaria · 31/10/2023 06:22

I love this thread!

The ongoing Israel/Palestinian conflict destabilises the entire region and creates the perfect conditions for hate and extremism.

A peaceful 2-state resolution to the crisis would have a positive effect not just on the lives of people in Israel and Palestine but across the entire region.

I'm sticking with You don't make peace treaties with terrorists

Controversial one here, Stella Braverman has her own agenda and is a massive hypocrite anyway. This woman talks about “swarms” of refugees/asylum seekers and wants them shipped off to Rwanda. She has no right to lecture about “hate”.

ThreeFeetTall · 31/10/2023 07:33

That arms companies have made lots of money due to the escalation in the conflict

Just this one? Not the 30+ others in the world? Just this war you want stopped?

I genuinely don't understand the obsession right now. War rages across the world most of the time and none of you gave a shit until this one.

None of you give a shit about any other conflict or child deaths but this war.

Mammillaria · 31/10/2023 07:37

Respectfully, whilst I do understand the sentiment behind "you don't make peace treaties with terrorists", I also do not agree with it.

I offer a quote from Mo Mowlam "you don't fight terrorism with weapons and bullets. You fight it by talking" Although that was very controversial in its time, so probably not suited to this thread either! (Sorry!)

I agree, and Mo Moslem was a clever and wonderful woman.

Would you have included people like David Ben-Gurion in that?

countrygirl99 · 31/10/2023 07:42

To add a bit of context to my comment my dad was one of those clearing up the peices of people after the King David Hotel bombing.

aswarmofmidges · 31/10/2023 07:47

So what happened in Northern Ireland then ? Were all terrorist organisations excluded ?

You have to talk to each other to resolve problems

ssd · 31/10/2023 07:48

Thank god some politicians can rise above the hate and make peace treaties with 'terrorists"

What do we teach our children, to keep on and on fighting because they both want the dame thing? No. We teach them to talk to each other and work it out.

Dhs dad was amongst the first British soldiers to enter Belsen Belsen. He was 22.

He was against war and believed in peace talks till he died in his 80s.

Whataboutism.

Pretending you have a crystal ball and can definitively say the rest of us haven't protested or don't care about other wars is a useful way to distract from this one. And yes many of us have strongly protested the other wars, check out the hundreds of threads protesting the Ukraine war on this site alone if you're doubting that, especially around the time the war started.

The particular urgency on this one is more children have died in this one in the last 3 weeks than all the other ongoing wars combined this year, so yes it is more pressing TBH to shout about it right now and yes it will be more front and centre.

So maybe making unsubstatiated claims with a view to throwing the thread off course is just your distraction technique.

Elvanseshortage · 31/10/2023 07:52

@Finlesswonder
I don’t understand why you say that wars are not ended by negotiation with terrorists?

Pretty much all wars are ended by negotiation with terrorists.

Daftasabroom · 31/10/2023 07:52

That some people will continue to post the same tired shit on multiple threads to try and derail them.

More children have died in this one conflict in 3 weeks than in all the others worldwide put together for a whole year.

To not be horrified by that is inhuman

Completely agree.

If I ever hear Gerry Adams on the radioTV I feel utter disgust but I know that those negotiations were necessary for the NI Peace Agreement.

Absolutely hear hear on this. That pro-Israeli govt propaganda bots are out in their thousands spreading the propaganda like mad, especially it seems here on MN.

That MN should add a caveat button we can auto add to all posts "no I do not condone Hamas, or their actions"
