@Efacsen and? Your point being?

@AskNotForWhomTheBellCurves I mean in terms of actually having a geographical base - it's not easy to fly or even shoot missiles from the US to bomb Iran, it's quite far! Perhaps a better way to say it would be "the US would try to persuade their ally to let them use their military bases to bomb Iran".

Of course long-range or nuclear warfare are options but they are difficult, risky, expensive and generally less desirable than attacking from close range.

@AskNotForWhomTheBellCurves is correct,
The US has bases in Turkey and Iraq. It also has two aircraft carriers just off shore. One is always patrolling the Mediterranean. The US also has security agreements allowing them to have fleets of drones like Globalhawk that can strike anywhere in the region on short notice.

Why do you think Egypt is afraid to defy Israel in regards to the humanitarian aid going in not being nearly enough or to let dual nationals/nonPalestininans out? Including British children btw.

DurhamDurham · 24/10/2023 17:02

But isnt the UK an ally too? We dont give that much money

How can you possibly compare the amount of money a huge country like the USA gives to a country the size of the UK?

Our Government is still sending Israel navy ships with troops and spy planes to support the IDF. We as a country are complicit in the ongoing massacres of children and innocent adult civilians despite our many peaceful citizen protests calling for peace talks. Our unelected Tory Party PM, Sunak, is not listening to calls for a cease fire and de-escalation and is, in my opinion, making decisions that I think he will come to regret in the long term, especially if massacre tips into genocide. The civilian death toll is quickly approaching similar death tolls in conflicts that were deemed by the UN and ICJ to be genocides.

Beenaboutabit · 24/10/2023 17:27

The US also funded the Mujahideen in Afghanistan against the Soviet Union and Sadam Hussain in Iraq against Iran. So there is political expediency to further geopolitical aims but there is also a massive pro-Israel lobby in the US and a media narrative that tends to be pro-Israeli and anti-Arabic, I presume as part of the effect lobbying

This is why in a nutshell OP. It is all about geopolitical aims of the western democracies in the Middle East. Civilians are pawns on a large chessboard.

Justcallmebebes · 24/10/2023 18:22

Because the Israel lobby is extremely powerful and the US and Israel have always been v closely allied

PTSDBarbiegirl · 24/10/2023 18:31

StarTrek6 · 24/10/2023 15:14

Loads of Jews in the US I should think, possibly influential.
Who funded the IRA ? I've always assumed it was expat Irish.

Lots of IRA dollar came from Americans, the type who say, "I'm Irish, Scots, German" and worship the myth of terrorism as freedom fighting. They didn't feel the same way when NYC was attacked on 9/11. Myth and nostalgia I think might be responsible for alot of funding of terrorist groups by people who will never lose their family members to their bombs, knives or nooses.

Surely the Muslim countries - Iran,Lebanon,Egypt,Siri’s,Jordan could liaise with Israel and Palestine and cobble together a 2state system -unfortunately they don’t want Israel there, so at the expense of the wellbeing of the Palestinians they continue the war- supply Hamas and hizbollah- ruin the lives of Palestinians, many in refugee camps in Jordan etc, for their own satisfaction.

Reallifelurker · 24/10/2023 20:20

Again, I will draw everyone's attention the fact that only approx 2% of Americans are Jewish.
Stereotyping Jews as being able to control Governments is anti - semitism

I’m not suggesting they can control the government I suggested they might be lobbying (which they wouldn’t need to do if secretly in charge)
I realise some Jewish people probably have not interest in Israel but given that it’s a Jewish state it’s not so bizarre to suggest some American Jews are concerned for its wellbeing as a nation.

They have tried. Obama tried to re initiate peace talks in 2009 and was blocked by Netanhyu until Netanhyu got fed up with Obama’s bringing it up that he came out in 2015 and declared as long as he was in power there would be no Palestinian State Whatsoever. When Trump came into office, he was on side with the no Palestinian state, therefore no two state solution. Hopes increased with Biden came into office, but he’s ignored it and now those hopes are dashed.

BlurredEdges · 26/10/2023 17:09

According to a recent study (based on the 2010 world population of 6.9 billion) by The Pew Forum, there are:

2,173,180,000 Christians (31% of world population), of which 50% are Catholic, 37% Protestant, 12% Orthodox, and 1% other.
1,598,510,000 Muslims (23%), of which 87-90% are Sunnis, 10-13% Shia.
1,126,500,000 No Religion affiliation (16%): atheists, agnostics and people who do not identify with any particular religion. One-in-five people (20%) in the United States are religiously unaffiliated.
1,033,080,000 Hindus (15%), the overwhelming majority (94%) of which live in India.
487,540,000 Buddhists (7%), of which half live in China.
405,120,000 Folk Religionists (6%): faiths that are closely associated with a particular group of people, ethnicity or tribe.
58,110,000 Other Religions (1%): Baha’i faith, Taoism, Jainism, Shintoism, Sikhism, Tenrikyo, Wicca, Zoroastrianism and many others.
13,850,000 Jews (0.2%), four-fifths of which live in two countries: United States (41%) and Israel (41%).

So yeah
We Jews are 0.2% of the world population.
Muslims are about a quarter of the world population and rapidly increasing.
Christians are nearly a third.

But please by all means carry on trying to demonise and exterminate the tiny number of us that remain.

They're drawing Hitler moustaches on photos of kidnapped Jewish babies down the road from me.

But carry on
You're doing pretty well

@BlurredEdges
I don’t understand your argument? How does the number of people on the planet practicing each religion relevant to the commission of war crimes in the Israeli conflict in their Occupied Palestinian Territories?

Are you implying that States representing minority religions cannot commit war crimes and to say that they have or are doing so, is “trying to demonise and exterminate” them? They are above criticism?

So, was the UNSC member right in saying it appears Israel is above international law? Would you agree with that? And would you agree that they are above international law because they are a minority religion?

I'm Jewish, from London, with Jewish children, parents family and friends. For those who are not - how do you think you'd feel if this were your home city?

Knowing that most of us lost grandparents/great grandparents and other relatives in the Holocaust. Just try and imagine what it feels like for us right now.

Saw that video earlier, it's pretty distressing. But apparently antizionism isn't antisemitism, just criticism of the Israeli government.

DillyDallyingAllDay · 26/10/2023 19:43

A lot of people seem to be forgetting that being Jewish doesn't =being Israeli.
And also a lot of people need to learn what being semetic is. Jews are not the only semites. And being anti israel isn't being antisemitic similar to being anti Islamic state isn't being islamophobic

So the way these threads generally work is:

  1. Excuse my ignorance as I don't know much about the Arab Israeli conflict but could someone please explain to me [insert something emotive]
  2. post some factually incorrect comments and deny certain events took place
  3. when countered / challenged or corrected immediately shift to whataboutery
  4. quickly moving on to conspiracy theories
  5. once seeds of doubt are planted revert back to denial

The thing is both sides of this debate are driven by conviction and will dismiss any factual information that shows their comments to be fake news. Nothing will ever change both sides views and unless we stop emotive opinions and instead stick to the facts then it will be impossible to reach a peaceful solution.

Whose facts though..........

If this offends you and not what Israel is doing to a city full of children then you failed at humanity.
Muslims are being murdered accross the world in hate crimes because of the news narrative.
I'm not saying I agree with choices of some people to show their anger but unfortunately Netanyahu is who you need to hold account for this.

So you're saying Jewish people are not allowed to be offended at people displaying swastikas and anti-semetic banners because other people are being murdered?

That anyone who finds Jewish students being locked in a library in any way worrying then they "failed at humanity"?

Toothyfruity · 26/10/2023 21:09

Also American politicians receive substantial payments to support Israel. Here's a list of donations. Joe Biden is top of the list which might explain why he's up Israels ass at the moment.

No.

The people who show antisemitic hate are responsible for their own actions. They are accountable for the posters they carry, for attacking people or defacing picture of kidnapped children. You can show anger towards the Israeli government and their policies without being an antisemitic cunt.

If you don't understand this, maybe you failed at humanity. Hth.

Although there are a number of people who fall under the category of semites, antisemitism is clearly defined as being specifically prejudiced against the Jews.

You think drawing Hitler moustaches on kidnapped Jewish toddlers in London, waving genocidal posters calling on people to kill all Jews in New York, waving Nazi swastikas, and defacing synagogues in Portugal is being 'anti-Israeli'?

No. You don't.
