How do you stop yourself from testing too early?

I obviously have no patience.

We have been trying to get pregnant for ages but this is only the second time I have really had any symptoms that I think might be hopeful (last time it happened I made myself wait until the day my period was due, was planning to test the next day, but period started first, right on time)

This time I have been feeling really sick last few days, have a wierd dryish sensation in my mouth and lots of salivia.
But not tired, no sore breasts or pains anything, and in any case period is not due until the weekend. So presumably too early to be feeling sick, must be in my head??
And also too early to test, really want to wait until I am late but I have no self control. Aaaargh! How do people stop themselves continually testing when they feel they might be pregnant?

I would wait. I've been trying for 2months now. Hoping this month will be the last but will find out in about 2 weeks.
I think the sickness could be in your head. I went through that, I believed I was pregnant and felt sick, went to the Dr, negative.
It is hard not to obsess over it, everytime I mention pregnancy or another baby my DP rolls his eyes like, "Oh dear she's off again"
But I've calmed down this past week or so, still mentally counting days but I recently took up knitting again and it seemed to have done the trick...I'm actually knitting a baby's hat! But seriously that's the only thing the magazine gave me to do!

I managed to hold off after I came across these stats on a thread:

"The percentages of those who get their BFPs on set dpo are as follows:
10dpo=35%
11dpo=51%
12dpo=62%
13dpo=68%
14dpo=74%
15dpo=80%
16dpo=88%
17dpo=92%
an d there are some who have not got their BFP until 21dpo "

I was more scared of testing early-ish, getting a negative and not knowing if it was a real negative or if it was inconclusive.

Also I am a tightwad and refused to keep buying tests.

But my goodness the days drag!

swizzlestar · 29/06/2010 09:21

Give any tests you have in the house to your oh!! I've seen lots of ladies on here doing this,and I'm now doing it myself.

I'm also ss........

Buy cheap tests to satisfy that urge that only peeing on a stick will satisfy.

TabithaTwitchet · 29/06/2010 18:45

Have taken the test out of the cupboard four times today, then thought better of it and put it back in again. Probably a good idea if I do give them into DH's keeping.
I know it makes sense to wait as I will be gutted to see a negative, better to live in hope for a bit, I think. But on the other hand I have this strong compulsion to start peeing on sticks right left and centre

Could always get a bit of cardboard, draw one control line on it and have a good wee... well it replicates my usual pee stick experience - one line, no joy with the other one :D

bossyboop · 29/06/2010 19:01

I hold my hands up and admit that i have found bfn tests in the cupboard and peed on them again to satisfy the urge!

stacey5426 · 29/06/2010 19:07

Im 8 days late, and tested a few times since AF was due but still negative.. Im TRYING to wait till sat to test again but im not convinced I can wait that long

Wanderingsheep · 29/06/2010 19:13

I never seem to get any symptoms. My only ever symptom of being pregnant has been a missed period! I also think that AF arriving feels much less disappointing than a BFN as a BFN seems really taunting so I prefer to wait.

sloathy · 29/06/2010 19:59

I was hopeless and tested about 15 times the week my AF was due but didn't get a postive until the day I was actually due. The only symptom I had was feeling like I was travel sick the whole time which got better if I ate something. I think that started about a week - 10 days before my period was due.

It is an obsession and very hard to resist. A friend of mine suggested that when you have the urge to buy a test put the money in a pot to spend on nice baby-related things in the future. I'm planning to give that a try this month when I hit the dreaded 2WW...

sarahscot · 29/06/2010 22:39

I can't make myself wait. Just did a test - negative Still 4 days til period due though so not giving up hope.

midori1999 · 30/06/2010 12:12

I am another 'non waiter' here. I tested on Monday, even though I knew I was only 7 days PO and there was no way I'd get a BFP regardless!

I am 10 days PO tomorrow and would like to wait until at least Saturday to test again, but not sure I can...

I was pregnant with twins last time and I still didn't get a BFP until the day after I was due AF.

zinnia · 30/06/2010 13:16

I stupidly tested last Thurs (AF due today) and got a BFN before I'd come on here and read the "do not test" threads. Doh.

Now, after having read the words of wisdom of fellow MNers, am willing myself to hold on till Saturday. Swarming with symptoms so will be completely gutted if it's another no.

My god it's hard though. I have a BOGOF of FR in the cupboard just waiting to have the cellophane ripped off them...

Iggisonthesofa · 30/06/2010 23:45

I could only stop myself if I moved to an island where the only chemist shop opened only once every year. Even then I'd probably swim to the mainland!
But it is better not to.

zinnia · 01/07/2010 09:52

Only one more morning to get through now. This is where being stuck in an office all day is a godsend. Even if I did give into temptation and nip out to Boots at lunchtime, I really don't want to find out in the loos at work!

Ariesgirl · 01/07/2010 11:07

Think of your bank balance?

Totallyfloaty35 · 01/07/2010 11:12

I tested today,im so bad at waiting, im only 10dpo
Got a BFN, so now im really annoyed with myself for wasting a test.
No symptoms as i have worked out (from studying my cycle sooo closely) that what i thought were pg symptoms actually occur every month and i just never noticed.
Have had brown spotting today though.But have spotted before, so no point getting excited

haribofan · 01/07/2010 22:02

I really don't understand early testing. With an early test, you'll prob get a BFN and if you test on the day you're due, you may get a BFN and then AF an hour later- very depressing!!! It's a no-brainer to me, wait until you're 2 days late and you'll most likely get a BFP by then.

bev2102 · 02/07/2010 02:58

My problem is that I always want to test early too! I'm convinced I'm pregnant and am now 4 days overdue but still negative this afternoon. Having said that though for some strange reason I don't test positive until I'm 6+ weeks pregnant!
With my DS I got my first positive (the feintest ever line) when I was 6 weeks 3 days pregnant! The solid blue line didn't appear until 8 weeks gestation!!
Is it just me or are there other late testers out there? How I wish I was one of those that tested positive 4 days before due on!

Good luck all TTC. Hope you're all (and me too.....!!) pregnant soon. x

emptyshell · 02/07/2010 08:42

I'm finding charting's helping with the obesesional early testing thing to be honest. Having some degree of knowledge over what's going on seems to knock the urge to pee, just to get some idea if there's a glimmer of hope or not, out of the way. I'm due on on Wednesday and by now normally I'm symptom spotting and peeing on sticks like crazy.

bev2102 · 05/07/2010 02:20

I just want to know either way now! I'm still showing no signs of AF coming and am now 6 days late! Going to POAS in the morning so fingers crossed!
Fingers crossed for a BFP for you next week emptyshell. Are you TTC DC1 or already have DCs?
