Bleed then positive test?

I had some bleeding on Saturday along with pain that came on quite suddenly for about 30 minutes then stopped, as did the bleeding (which I thought was my period starting as was definitely more than spotting).

I was due yesterday but no period so today did a test which was positive and have cramping.

I had a missed miscarriage at 12 weeks in Jan so want to be realistic about this - do you think the bleed means I did conceive but probably didn't implant and the test today is because of left over hormones or could I be in fact pregnant and it was implantation bleeding?

it depends on the appearance of the blood.

was it bright red, dark red, any clots?

i had a large bleed in my 1st pg at 8wks and all was fine, that was bright red blood with no clots.

last summer i had a +pg test and started bleeding a few days later with clots and that was a miscarriage as pg tests got fainter and fainter.

if you have no more bleeding i would do another test in a few days.

the fact that you had a BFP after bleeding would lead me to suggest that you are pg. however, you need to call epu or see your doctor. they need to rule out an ep. its entirely possible that the bleed was implantation, but it still needs to be checked out. good luck.

ginhag · 19/05/2010 16:19

I second calling your gp. Hopefully it was implantation and you are pg. But it is really important to get checked to be sure all is fine.

Bodinga · 19/05/2010 17:07

Thanks all.

It was bright red, no clots.

Did call EPU this morning and they said won't scan till 6 weeks and I would definitely be only 4 weeks if I am pg.

BUT - will call dr tomorrow to get appointment to rule out EP. Cramping today is like previous pregnancies - it was just on Sat that it was quite sudden and strong.

Other thing is DH is running his 1st marathon at weekend, done loads of training, looking to do it in a really good time etc and he is already stressed about that. Can't decide whether to tell him or not re test. He would spend the whole time worrying about me if I told him (because of previous miscarriage mainly) and would hate to spoil it for him after he has worked so hard. Would you tell your DH?

I probably would tell dp. He'll be pissed off in the end if you don't,and you may need his support.

Yes no point scanning til 6 weeks,or until your hcg reach the right levels. But they can test if hcg is increasing in a 'normal' fashion to help rule out ectopic...and will prob scan at 6 weeks if any uncertainty.

Please don't get too into making decisions based on colour of blood/no clots...if it was an ectopic then it would not have same symptoms as a mc. It sounds like the cramping is something you have experienced before, but again, keep an eye on it.

Sorry to be all doom and gloom and I really hope everything is fine (and there is a great chance everything will be!) Am just speaking from experience and know for sure it's best to get checked out...

Good luck,I hope all goes really well for you.

I think the others are right about getting this checked out to be on the safe side, but just to reassure you, what you describe sounds exactly like the kind of implantation bleeding I have had every time I've got pregnant - a few days before AF is due, bright red bleed, for quite a short time.

Also as ginhag says, ask for HCG blood tests - they can scan sooner than 6 weeks if your HCG reaches a certain level (can't remember the level exactly, I think maybe over 1,500/2000?) to check that the gestation sac is in the womb.

Fingers x'd for a sticky one

Bodinga · 19/05/2010 17:32

Thanks ginhag.

Not jumping to any conclusions or assumptions at all. Had a missed miscarriage in Jan - no symptoms at all so was a complete shock at 12 week nuchal scan to be told baby had stopped developing at 10 weeks. Taking nothing for granted!

bodinga am so sorry...the same thing happened to me (mmc at 12 week scan.) I had no idea anything was wrong either. It's a horrible thing to happen.

Am really hoping things go well for you this time.

ginhag · 19/05/2010 17:43

And I wasn't saying that you were jumping to conclusions, hope it didn't sound like that. It's only that from my experience (I also had an ectopic, which 'luckily' I miscarried..on Xmas day...joy...) was that mn is wonderful for support and info, but that none of us here can come to any actual conclusions about your bleeding, only contribute our experience....iyswim.

Bodinga · 19/05/2010 18:05

I do swym ginhag and didn't think you had suggested anything like that! Just wanted to mention that I was keeping an open mind to things at the mo - early days and all that. (Prob used the wrong wording - never comes out how you want it to does it!)

It's so hard isn't it? I can remember when getting a + on a test was just a simple, happy and exciting thing. It gets a lot less straightforward once you have had the rug pulled from under you (crap expression.)

hoping for good news soon.
