More than 6 months on Clomid?

Hi, I just wondered how many of you have used Clomid for more than 6 months? Did it work for you after this time? I have just finished my 6th cycle of Clomid on 50mg and have been prescribed another 6 months on 100mg. Scans will be done to monitor me but just a bit worried as I've heard that 6 months is the maximum. The next 6 months will be my last chance (unless it happens naturally after that)so really interested to hear peoples experiences. thanks! )

i used clomid unsucessfully for 6 months never longer i dont know why i was never told. the condition i have is pcos and i got so desperate i took agnus cactus after i finished clomid and within 2 months i was pregnant and went full term and now have a ds. i hope you have some luck. dont stop trying is my only advice. i tried for 7 years.

Do you have a diagnosis of the underlying problem?.

Its not recommended to use clomid for another six months at an increased dosage.
Some women, particularly if PCOS is an issue, can become clomid resistant and no amount of clomid therefore could help.

I would ask them about other treatment options. Who is treating you currently, are you at a subfertility clinic or is this all the GPs doing?.

Do you feel you have been adequately investigated or do you think you are being fobbed off here?

6 courses is generally set as a maximum because taking clomid for a long time / at higher doses can slightly increase your risk of ovarian cancer I believe. And like attila says, clomid has some anti-conception effects (can thin endometrium, thicken CM) too, which build up over extended use making conception less rather than more likely.
Do you know if you were responding - i.e. ovulating - at 50mg? If so, TBH another 6 months at 100mg is unlikely to help. If not, they should have upped the dose sooner.
If I were you, I'd make another appt now, give clomid at 100mg a try for one or two monitored cycles, then talk about moving on to the next treatment. Might be tamoxifen, injectables, ovarian drilling, IUI ... (assuming you have PCOS or some other ovulation issue).
Good luck to you, it's so tough. I finally conceived DS on 100mg clomid, my sixth round, after five rounds at 50mg (ovulating but no BFP), so it does happen

thanks for all your replies! i already have a DS who is 4 so am under a fertility clinic for secondary infertility. been TTC for nearly 3 years. had all the usual tests done and so has my DH. i had to have a laparoscopy as tubes were all twisted and blocked, plus had scarring from previous c-sec. got mild endo and from last blood test i did ovulate, all tubes cleared now as well. they just think i might not ovulate reg. i think they've been really quick and i've had good treatment - just a bit wary to take another 6 months - and as its double the dosage! suppose they think as nothings happened it might help. the next step would be IUI which we would have to pay for, which we couldn't afford and agreed we would stop after taking clomid as we are so grateful for DS.

sorry if i haven't used abbreviations - not sure of all of them yet!

puddock, i was thinking that, just try 100mg for a couple of months while they are monitoring me with scans and then if nothings happens we will probably think about stopping there. see how it affects me. just hard to finally say thats it!

ive been on clomid 50mg for over 9 months,i have pcos ive been prodded n poked and had every test possible my tubes are not blocked after the 9 months my gyno said the next step would be ivf but i was refused ivf as my husband has children 16 and 19 so i was offered 3 more months of clomid only my doctor forgot to give me my tablets before saying their was nothing else he could do for me bye bye i was speechless.
i was so upset and thought whats the point ive been trying for over 5 years so i forgot about it id had 9 months worth they say if after 3 months it dnt work chances are it isnt going to
anyway i got pain and ended up having a scan turned out i had fat in my liver i went to my normal doctors and a note flashed up on the computer saying i needed blood taken for 21 day progesterone test from gyno at the hospital i told her i hadnt taken my tablets so there was no need as he failed to give me them and that he could'nt wait to get me out the door, so she prescribed me another 3 months worth, only when i got the tablet it was different bigger and had clomid on it not clomiphene, i thought it was the same so why the different tablet anyway i took it as normal but i had no bad symptoms with it like the other clomiphene tablet, (it made me hot at night and have tummy pain) i thought that the clomid might not of worked but now im a week late, my breast are sore, ive been dizzy, heartburn, peeing alot n my sense of smell has changed strong smells make me gag though ive havent actually been sick i dont know if its an effect of the clomid or im imagining half of it or am i actually pregnant my periods are normally messed up but when i took clomiphene before i was never late is it because the tablets different and if it is different how much different is it,
i cant get into the doctors till next week any ideas anyone? i dont think i could face another negative test so i refuse to buy one Confused
