Clomid and already ovulating normally - help please!

Dear All

Are there any experts out there on clomid or Clomifene? I've just been prescribed it today - for 6 months - and asked to go back for progesterone test on day 21 of first cycle.

However, I am ovulating normally and have had blood tests to assess this. My partner has low normal sperm forms (5%) so we've been told if clomid doesnt work, we have to go for a more complex form of IVF- ICSI I believe - and we may not get funding for that until we've tried for 2 years! It's been a year so far.

I read conflicting evidence online about how effective Clomid is for women who are already ovulating so I'm confused! Does it really increase your chances of conceiving if you are already ovulating or am I being fobbed off?

Would appreciate any advice.

Hi Annie, I can't be of much help I'm afraid but will watch keenly for any replies. I am in a similar situation. We are ttc no.3 (but first time on clomid). I ovulate normally too. I was full of hope the first month on clomid as so many people seem to get lucky first month but nada! So now I'm on the 2nd cycle of it and my mood is not too optimistic. I've told my clinic (we went private) that I can't see any point in doing more than 3 months on clomid as I ovulate anyway. They haven't got back to me about that statement yet . I hope you get lucky first time

Another no-advice-but-in-same-boat here. Tests have shown I ovulate normally, the boyf's sperm was fine, but on the slightly lower end of fine. So FC prescribed 6 months of Clomid to make me "super-fertile" (their words). Have just taken first dose & am on 2ww.

There is a huge amount of inconsistency regarding this drug. I've been told in MN that its bad practice to prescribe 6 months of this drug up front as that is the maximum recommended for a lifetime. Also I haven't been asked to go back for day 21 tests. I had a scan on CD9 to check if I had follicles.

TBH I'm planning to see what happens this month. If I fall lucky, all well & good. If not I'm going back to the FC armed with questions that I just didn't think about first time around.

annie I've just noticed you posted on my other thread about ovulation sticks. At least I can answer that one now.

I read the instructions properly last night & it said not to test with early morning urine as an LH surge can take up to 4 hours to show. Best time to test is between 10am & 8pm.

I was testing at 6.02am with early morning urine. Numpty.

Have also been told that Clomid can, ahem, dry you up a bit. So if you usually rely on heavy amounts of EWCM to indicate when you ovulate, it may not be so obvious. (I've definitely found this, & thought I was the first person who usually ovulated normally & Clomid stopped it). To help with the EWCM I've been advised grapefruit juice. Then switch to pineapple after ovulation.
