Ages of Older Mums

Hi

I'm thinking about having another child - I have one 2.5 year old already and I'm now 41!

What was your age when you had your latest child?

Juggling the idea of going or not going for it!

Hey, I'm 39. I had a miscarriage at 4 weeks last month. Desperate to try again but scared my age is the reason I miscarried.x

Smellybluecheese · 15/03/2017 14:14

It's so great to read of other older mums. Sometimes I feel like a complete aberration. I had my first (& only) at 41. Decided to start trying on my 40th birthday. Had 2 early miscarriages then my DD. Got pregnant first month each time of trying. All natural. I'm 44 now and would love another one but there is no way we could afford two lots of nursery fees and by the time DD is in school the ship will definitely have sailed!

Alibaba2 · 15/03/2017 22:22

I think 40+ sounds old until you reach 40 and still feel 21. I don't judge anyone having kids over 40 now but perhaps I did a little when I was younger. It seems old but doesn't feel old now I'm here.

DorcasthePuffin · 15/03/2017 22:27

I had my first at 41, and adopted my second at 45.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 15/03/2017 22:34

Had my first at 38 and my second two weeks before my 41st birthday. Conceived easily enough without assistance, straightforward pregnancies, complicated birth with #1 (although nothing to do with my age) and straightforward elc with #2.

Have never felt too old to cope with any of their stages. I had plenty of older mum friends when they were babies and I know many women the age I am now (mid 50s) with teens still at home.

3rd almost 43, conceived naturally. History of miscarriage tho.

goldenrachita · 16/03/2017 16:27

I know this is an old thread but I see quite a lot of recent responses!

I'm 41 expecting my first in 3 months' time. Not a long process to get pregnant- only 4 months. I'd like another one soon afterwards and feeling weirdly optimistic.

Alibaba2 · 17/03/2017 12:30

Any tips Golden? Did you take any supplements or are you just naturally fertile?

TrueBlueDem · 18/03/2017 03:03

Just want to say I love this thread! I have had 4 kids (I'm 39), and am thinking about 1 more, but don't feel like it's the right time yet...thinking a year from now would be better but worry about trying when older (although we have never had a problem getting pg). Love reading about all these successes of 40+ mamas! :)

TrueBlueDem · 18/03/2017 03:04

Alibaba2- SO true haha!! I remember being like 20 years old, thinking 30 was OLD lol! Now I'm 39 and still feel 20, in my mind at least. ;)

Beansonapost · 18/03/2017 04:01

My mother was 48... child #8.

Was an accident as she says... Hmm

But my sister is fantastic and a brilliant 11yr old now.

janed9388 · 18/03/2017 06:20

My first was at 41, pregnant at 42 but lost that one just before my 43rd birthday at about 10 weeks. Pregnant again about 4 months later and had that one 2 days after I turned 44 (planned section should have been on my birthday but decided to give him his own day rather than sharing with me). Both successful pregnancies were relatively easy.

I definitely couldn't have done it much earlier as I didn't feel grown up enough ! not entirely sure I am now but we seem to be managing.

Clara101 · 18/03/2017 08:20

Good to read these stories, I had first at 38, second 41, now 44 and trying (optimistically..!) for third. Been trying 12-18 months.. Like Ali wd love tips fm anyone who managed, esp at 43/44/45..

lisara79 · 18/03/2017 16:06

What a great thread. I worry about my age all of the time. Im 37 and ttc #1. My partner is 47 (he has a 17 year old son). We are cycle 3 (2 really as didn't try hard cycle 2).

WelshMammy123 · 18/03/2017 19:48

I'm pleased to have stumbled across this thread as well. I'm lucky I know as I have a dd who's now 2. It took us over 3 years and and a failed ivf before we conceived her naturally.

I had a MMC (conceived cycle 2) and a tfmr (conceived cycle 4) last year. I'm now 38 and so worried we'll never manage DC2. It's been 4 cycles since my tfmr and AF arrived 3 days early this month. Feels like it's never going to happen......

Reassuring to know that age isn't necessarily as much of an issue as the media would perhaps have us believe xx

Backhometothenorth · 18/03/2017 19:56

First DD at 39, second DD, who is now 6 months old, at 43. Two MMC's in between.
All naturally conceived. Go for it and good luck!

Ilovewillow · 18/03/2017 20:37

42 with no 2, both of mine were IVF!

Katurah · 18/03/2017 21:34

Had my son after a year of trying at 36 and am currently 16 weeks with DC2 at 38. I had a miscarriage in September at 9 weeks.

Straightforward pregnancy so far but have opted for the harmony test as I do feel old!

Katurah · 18/03/2017 21:34

Meant to say, last two pregnancies were first month of trying too!

Adelie0404 · 18/03/2017 21:40

Some of us are very very lucky. I know I was - first 35 and second 39. Pregnant in first month of trying both times (one disappointed husband!). But the stats don't support this as the norm. Be as healthy and fit as you can is all I can suggest! And best of luck to everyone!

Just joined Mumsnet this evening - I’m 41 and just been told by a fertility clinic to try to get pregnant as soon as possible as IVF likely won’t work for me in a few years’ time. I thought I had a few more years left before starting, so now I’m terrified! I’m looking for a job and now need to ensure it is permanent in case I need maternity pay. So stressful. Was she wrong?
