this is a long one but i hope someone can help. my friend called to see me this morning and said she wasnt feeling well. we are great friends so joking i said yea you might be pregnant and come to think of it you do look pregnant what with that big tummy!!!! im fat and so it she so we joke about it all the time.(looking pregnant) she burst into tears and said she thought she was. she has not had a period since december but took two tests last month both neg. i gave her a cheap test like the gp uses and it came up neg too. she did the tesco tests last month. i must admit im no midwife but her fat tummy looks a different shape. could the tests be wrong. would an expensive digital be better?? do pregnancy tests only work for a few months the give negs after a certain time even if your pregnant or would they always show positives.

I've never had a positive test. Even when PG with ds1, I did a test at 7months, and it was still neg, so it is possible.

Maybe she should go to the dr's to be properly checked out.

Yes it is possible to get negatives when pregnant.

If she hasn't had a period since Dec then she really needs to see a dr asap. Of course she may be pregnant which would be fantastic but personally I'd be more worried that she may not be IYSWIM - don't tell her that, the drs can check hormone levels using a blood test which is more accurate.

it is more unusual not to have a positive pregnancy test when pregnant than not, ifyswim

no periods since december when we are nearly in april and no positive pregnancy test needs checking out, if she is pregnant, she is 3 months + so needs scan , referral to MW etc

if not, it is not normal to suddenly stop having periods

she might not be having htem due to medication or other issues, but she must be checked out

what a worry

Period cessation like this can be due to hormonal imbalances (PCO or thyroid imbalance are common culprits and your friend should be tested for both). It is unlikely that your friend is pg given the repeated negative test results.

She should consider going to her GP and discussing this problem with him along with having blood tests done.

thanks for that. i have been to see her and said she MUST see gp tomorrow morning. God im nervous for her now!!! she would be delighted to be pregnant so at least if she was it would be wanted. didnt know thyroid caused problems with af. something new learned every day.
ill let you know if she is pregnant.
