Please can anyone help me? Got BFP when af was 2 days late. at 5 weeks (so few days later ) got some brown discharge. Tried not to worry about it and day or so later it stopped.

A few days passed with nothing and then suddenly on Sunday night I had a slight bleed - this time red blood but not a lot. Presumed 'period' was about to start but it never did. Was this a miscarrage - there was hardly any blood at all? Is it all still to come? I asked a doctor for advice but he said to wait a week or two (!!) and if no more blood then to do another pregnancy test. If neg then just wait for period to arrive which it would do eventually.

I should be 6wks tomorrow. I had the bleed 3 days ago, if this was a miscarrage could a preg test still show positive because of hormones still in my body or would they have gone by now? desperate to know if i am still pregnant or not. How soon can i test?

Hello chainedtothedesk, what a worrying time, sorry you're going through it

So let me understand - it's just under two weeks since your bfp and you've had a couple of small bleeds? Often small bleeds are nothing to worry about (in fact reading posts from ladies on here sometimes big bleeds are nothing to worry about!)

Your GP has said wait a week or two because most early pregnancy units won't scan you until you are 8 weeks, this is because by the time you are 8 weeks there should be a heartbeat visible. Before then the lack of a heartbeat may be an indication of problems but may also be that you ovulated later in your cycle than you thought for example so they couldn't confirm a miscarriage so early. SO they will scan you, say it is inconclusive and tell you to come back in two weeks.

My last pregnancy my GP did say that bleeding about 4-6 weeks is often the embryo burying deeper into the lining as he explained it.

Yes, your pregnancy test would very likely still show positive if you have miscarried, the hormones take a while to subside. Last pregnancy I had slight bleeding from 6 weeks, miscarriage confirmed at 9 weeks, heavy bleeding started at 10 weeks and positive pregnancy tests until 11 weeks.

But for nothing it could very well all be OK, try the doctor again in a week when you're 7 weeks see if he will book you in for a scan so you get one near the 8 week point. As to when to test I would hold off and only test of the bleeding gets really heavy?

Good luck I hope it works out OK for you.

Thanks for your reply. I'm sorry to hear you've been through this too. It must have been very hard to know that you'd miscarried but had to wait weeks until the proper bleeding started. I can't help feel that this is what i'm doing now.

My GP actually said to test now but it was me that said shouldn't i wait as surely the hormones still in my body would give a false positive so i didn't have much faith in his opinion after that. I suppose its just a matter of sitting it out.

Sorry you are going through this, I would ask your GP to refer you straight away to your local early pregnancy assessment unit (assuming you are in the UK) they will be able to get you in for a scan within a couple of days which at 6 weeks a gestational sac and a yolk sac should be visible indicating that the pregnancy is continuing. You may even see a heartbeat, but not always. They will also likely do a blood test and repeat it a couple of days later, which can tell you if the amount of pregnancy hormone in your blood is going up (indicating ongoing pregnancy) or going down (miscarriage)

hope it all works out well for you
