'Severe Oligospermia' HELP!!!!!

Hi Ladies,

We had a wee appointment with DP doctor last night, they never realised that we had been to the hospital and are now on the waiting list for ICSI (lack of communication somewhere). Anyway as we were leaving he gave us a letter (so we did not leave empty handed - lol) - think they were embarrassed as we went down for nothing basically.

Anyway this letter had a brief description of DP problems. The letter says that he has 'severe oligospermia' , his sperm count was less the 50,000/ml and over 90% were immotile...

Can anyone explain to me in 'simple english' what this means. I think DP was a bit gutted as the doctor made it very clear that ICSI was our only chance of becoming parents together - what scares me is, if ICSI does not work for us...WHAT NEXT???

My DH has same problems as yours - very low sperm count and low motility.

Thing is we already have a DD who is 2, and we conceived extremely easily. I think the hospital were [shocked] at this as his results really were v bad.

We have only found out about DHs problems since having DD, as we have TTC no 2 for nearly 2 years now. Hospital have mnetioned IVF, but are running loads of tests on DH first to see if they can find the reason for his problems (hormone blood test, ultrasound of his balls).

He's also taking loads of vitamins,exercising more, has stopped drinking alcohol completely and cut down on caffeine.

He's also got 2 more semen anaylsis's to see if things have improved. It appears sperm results can change over time...and the hospital seem to think that DH's have got worse for some reason since DD, and that it may be possible to improve them.

Well either that or DD was a lucky miracle but that just shows that you only need one good one.

Has the hospital run any other tests on your DH? Has he tried lifestyle changes?

The have taken bloods etc from him but that has shown up nothing so far. He had kidney problems when he was younger, he is on 3 pills a day to maintain his kidney function, i personally think it may be that - but the doctors wont really agree/disagree.

DP has changed his diet, cut out alcohol (- a few on a sat) and also his out running a lot more!

I just feel so helpless for him!

Yes I feel helpless too. Also scared because I think he's just assuming his results will improve because of everything he's been doing. What if they don't? He'll be so upset

I think more often than not they don't find a reason for low sperm counts so there's nothing they can do to help. It's v frustrating.

I think ISCI is v effective for people like us though Are you getting treated on the NHS?

Yes we can have 2 turns on NHS, failing that we will have to go private! Its so scary tho, I just pray it works for us!

I was so glad to see your post. We are in a very similar position to you at the moment.

I already have a DS who is 3 and was concieved really easily but we have been trying for No2 for nearly a year.

About 6 months ago DP had a sperm count which came back at just 5% healthy about the same time I found I was pregnant.

Unfortunatly we lost the baby at christmas and had to start all over agian in the NY. DP has just had the results of sperm test number 2 which is now at 10%.

Sadly our doctor called him at work so we havent been able to discuss it with her.
She did say she wound't refer us to the clinic because there 'is no point' - not sure what that means!
I have so many questions and can't get an appointment for 2 weeks.

DP has done so well cutting back caffene, booze and he joined a gym.

I am so worried about this I can't sleep.

Sorry I have not replied before now, I just noticed your wee message

I am confused to hear the doctor has said 'no point' being refered. If he has 10% there it would suggest you could be put forward for ICSI treatment, this is the treatment I have 2 recieve due to my DP fertility problems.

I understand why you are so worried etc, I keep reminding myself tho that DP had got some sperm there (it only takes 1)

So please have HOPE!!!!
