Don't worry, they are ok - take some nurofen plus about an hour beforehand. The uncomfortable part of mine was they trying to get the speculum in the right position, the dye bit I didn't feel at all and is over incredibly quickly.

I had mine after not getting pg for 2 years.. I got pregnant in the week after having it done - even though they didn't see a blockage, the effect can flush you out so it is well worth doing. This time round I am pregnant on first month of trying and am convinced that the HSG 'fixed' whatever was wrong. Obviously this may not be the case for you but there is a much higher fertility rate in the few months after having it done, so fgs keep shagging

Had mine in October I think it was. Didn't make me get pregnant alas (congrats privetdancer) but I did get all clear which means we could go on to next stage - now about to start iui next month.

I had mine at uch. I got given antibiotics and pain killers to have in advance. The waiting was the worst bit. It was unpleasant while it happened but not as bad as I feared - basically they found it hard to get speculum in right place but really that was no worse than a smear, and I bled a lot but that was icky more than anything (and I have recently been told I have a retroverted urerus which would have caused this).

The actual process put pressure on my tummy so I thought I was going to poo myself - in fact I even told them I thought I would if they continued then they stopped and as soon as they stopped it was all okay and tea and cake with my dh made everything much better.

Sorry if that sounded braggy btw, I was just trying to point out it might have advantages, unlike most other diagnostic procedures!

Had mine a few years ago after being off birth control for nearly 2 years and no pregnancy. XH and I had just separated the month before, but I wanted to have it anyway, just to know if I was ok (it had been scheduled for months).

I had a bit of a tricky cervix, they had a hard time threading the tube for the dye through it. I would say the whole thing was uncomfortable, but not strictly painful. Fascinating to see the dye moving through on the monitor, I was all clear.

The very mild painkiller they gave me was either not-so-mild, or I was just being dozy that day. I took the wrong bus twice trying to get home after because I was tring to save money (should have got a cab!)

I did get pregnant with new partner (now DH2) a little over a year later.

Good luck, just think of it as practice for the indignities of childbirth.

I had one a couple of weeks ago - like PrivetDancer the most painful part for me was the speculum which I always find extremely painful (I've been told I have a retroverted uterous too). If you've had a pap smear you'll know what that's like for you.

The dye part feels 'period crampy' as it goes in - weird but it wasn't unbearable, and I didn't take any painkillers beforehand and wasn't given antibiotics etc. It was done under sterile conditions. I did take nurofen afterwards though.

I think the worse part is probably feeling so vulnerable, but I straight up told the consultant before it started that I was really scared. She was very kind, talked me through it all the way. It's over very quickly. The relief of it being not as bad as I feared it would be had me in tears all the way home. Good luck.
