IVF/egg collection - technical question

AliBaba · 23/06/2003 16:35

I'm not sure if Mumsnet is the appropriate place to ask this, but I've been reading the conception threads avidly over the last few months, feeling horribly voyeuristic, and have found them incredibly helpful.

We've been trying (yuk!) for the best part of 3 years, and had our first IVF egg collection a month or so ago - 21 embryos now in the freezer because of the risk of OHSS. This is very exciting in itself, but....

In normal circumstances, my period (usually boringly regular) would have turned up on Friday. Am I being completely unrealistic to think this might mean the hitherto impossible? Or have all the drugs sent my cycle up the spout? Has anyone else had experience of this, please?

I'm sure I'm tempting fate by even writing this...

Hi there AliBaba. Great news that you've got so many embryos and hope this means you will be pg sometime very soon. I can't answer your question I'm afraid, as I've very flukily managed to get pregnant on both my IVF attempts. I'm sure cycles where the embryos fail to implant are quickly folllowed by bleeding after you stop taking cyclogest, but I have no idea what happens if there is no embryo transfer. Did you have bleeding after your treatment - so are you waiting for your period 28 days after that?
I would imagine (sorry) that the most likely explanation is that your hormones are a bit messed up, but you could always do a test anyway. Or phone the clinic and ask them what usualy happens in your circumstances?
Anyway hope I am wrong, and if not hope that you have some good luck with your embryos!

Elliot - thank you so much for the speedy reply. I have been following your fantastic success story and have been so encouraged by it. Yes I did have bleeding, and yes, this is 28 days later - but yes, I'm sure you're right about the hormones.... Hmmm. Will wait and see.
ABx

Alibaba - I'm about to start my 3rd icsi cycle - so am in a position to help - yes my first period after ivf took about 6 weeks to arrive ( usually 31 day cycle) and from looking at the ivf board I use that is quite normal' - have a look at this ivf site
I've also done one FET cycle ( when we ''wasted' and 13 embryos going for a blastocyst transfer!)
Good luck with the frosties

bayleaf - good luck with your icsi cycle. My dd is 12 months old, conceived after 6 icsi's so keep the faith!!

AliBaba · 24/06/2003 17:39

Bayleaf, that's really helpful, even if it's not what I want to hear! Am trying not to get too obsessed about the whole thing so have been resisting the temptation to look at ivf sites, but that looks like a good one. GOOD LUCK with your next treatment, and thanks again. x

Alibaba - I think you're absolutely right to try and stay away - but it is a good site when you have a 'technical' question that you need answering/ the cheapest drug deals etc etc.
