TTC#1 but prolactin level rising and too high

Hi,

after 18months ttc#1 I have now had two blood tests by my Gp and my prolactin level has been: 675 and 843, and apparently it should be below 495 to conceive. I am seeing Gp again tomorrow, and will get my 21 day fertility blood test results also (they got lost!).

Has anyone else had this issue? Should I ask for referral to fertility clinic, or to endoctrinologist or both? I take antidepressants and my Gp contacted my consultant who said the AD's shouldn't be causing this rise (not sure I believe that as my dose increased and my prolatin level has risen) but I have to stay on the same ADs and am 34yrs old.

Hi,
I was also told I had high levels of prolactin - can't remember now what the numbers were, but think it was not as high as yours. But (hope this helps) I had 2 tests showing high levels, but then did get pregnant. I was already being seen for fertility issues - would have been about to start on Clomid - but my doctors didn't seem to think the prolactin issue was conclusive. I would ask for a fertility referral though, definitely. FWIW, I conceived after having sex much later in the month than I would have thought worthwhile, in a month when I had already written off our chances.

Not much help, I'm afraid, but other people will have more experience with what happens now, I'm sure.

Hello - I had prolactin levels of over 1000 after giving up bf my DD (a little different to you I know). Nearly 12 months after stopping bf I still had not had an AF. I am now on bromocriptine prescribed by my endo and my AF returned 8 weeks after I started on the medication. My GP referred me, I would ask for them to refer you asap as it took me 4 months to get an appointment.
Are you having AFs and ovulating? I clearly wasn't so the meds helped me with all of that.

Anyway, good luck.

I had high prolactin level and was given dostinext to bring it down. I conceived twice. Some ladies on here have been told not take dostinex if TTC but bromocriptine.

Ask for a referral to an endo.

Thanks very much. I will certainly ask for referral now, as 843 is too high - will keep ttc and hopefully if I get medication it will help!

I am having AFs, although much lighter than they used to be and shorter. I believe I am ovulating, although my progesterone level was not as high as it could be.

Great to hear some positive stories of conception

Oh how frustrating - spoke to Gp last night and he said that he would think about what to do! I said "could I have a referral to endo as my prolactin needs reducing if I am to conceive" - so further week or two of waiting before anything happens!

How frustrating, I think I am really lucky and have the best doctors in the world, they rang up the endo at the local hospital to ask for their opinion as I sat there Keep hassling and good luck.
