Is it possible to get a false positive pregnancy test result?

Have been ttc since I mc last October, my periods have been all over the place so very difficult to judge when to test. Have been feeling pregnant last couple of days, no real symptoms just a bit of back pain and slight queasiness which is how I knew I was pregnant previously. Just took a test which had an INCREDIBLY faint positive result. Don't want to get my hopes up, is it possible to get a false positive result, or would there be absolutely not even a trace of the vertical line if I wasn't? Will test again in a few days to check again, but am already feeling excited and don't want to be disappointed!

Did the line appear in the allotted time period? if so then it is unlikely to be a false.

Test in a few days or in the morning with FMU just to be sure.

Don't think so, because it tests for a particular hormone that is only present during pregnancy. I think. You can get lines if you've left it for ages, but if you looked at it right away, I don't think that line can be there without the hormone it is looking for.

I think.

test again. Buy a really good test, like clearblue or something.

It is possible yes but only in very particular circumstances like having aggressive chemotherapy. The test details these rare circumstances. Otherwise a line is a line.

Tentatively, congratulations.

as far as i know a positive is just that - a positive

congratulations

Thanks oops, yes, appeared after about 2 minutes, but the not pregnant line appeared straight away, only noticed the second line as I went to put it in the bin, which is why I was confused! Will test again in a few days. In fact will probably test a few more times, with my first dc I did 5 tests, then got the GP to do another

That second line isn't a not pregnant line, it's a control line to prove the test is working. It's meant to come up straight away.

replies, god awful spelling!

It was a clearblue test, where you get a cross for pregnant, horizontal line for not, and a separate little window with a control line.

Oh, sorry I probably sound like an idiot now!

I've not used Clear Blues except for the digitals. Personally I like a nice Superdrug own brand.

after six years of ttc ds , we bought five tests & still i couldn't believe i was finally pregnant so went to my GP to confirm , he told me it was not possible for a test to be a false positive , due to the fact that the test picks up on the pregnancy hormone , so congratulations

hmmSleep · 18/02/2010 18:16

Thank you elmofan, that is good news, now I just have to keep my fingers crossed all goes OK this time.

Muser, must admit normally buy sainsburys own brand myself, but they'd ran out today!

liahgen66 · 18/02/2010 18:27

sleep how sensitive do you find Sainsburys?

hmmSleep · 18/02/2010 19:24

liahgen, I haven't tested this early before as with previous pregnancies my cycle wasn't as messed up so I knew when to test. With my last pregnacy I used sainsburys own and got a very strong positive two days before my period was due if that helps.

The horizontal line comes up whether you're pregnant or not - the same line makes up a "-" as a "+". The fact the vertical | came up after the "-" is irrelevant, no?

Tentative congratulations

hmmSleep · 19/02/2010 15:26

Took another test today, one with words this time 'pregnant' or 'not pregnant' figured I couldn't get confused by that, (and here's me thinking I was relatively intelligent!)

'pregnant' Yeh!

Keeping it secret this time, last time told the whole world and then had to keep telling people about mc when they asked how pregnancy was going. So fingers crossed .
