when to have day 21 test?

apologies for the probably stupid question, but I am still learning and gp is useless (he thought all women ovulate on day 14)

I had my +ve on OPK on Monday, and I'm booked for a so-called day 21 test (7 days post ov) on Monday. Is this a day too early? (i.e. doesn't surge indicate just before ovulation? think I felt ov pains early hours of Tues am). and will it matter if its done a day early? (really hard to change appointments at my surgery!)

sorry, lots of questions!

After having an experience with a similar GP, who told me I wasn't ovulating based on my day 21 test, we went by the length of my cycle and counted back 14. I think I had the day '21' test on day 26, and it was positive for ovulation. I ovulate anywhere between day 19-23.

Do you chart? I always found FF a good back up, and provided me with lots of info for arguing against the 'one size fits all' investigatory test policy...

Good luck x

The "day 21" test can be done at 6,7,8 or 9 dpo and still indicate the correct result. But ov pains and opk's are not good indicators of when you have ovulated. You can get a positive opk a couple of days before you ovulate, up to a day after (as my case!). Ov pain can occur up to 5 days before and a couple of days after. The more reliable ways of pin-pointing ovulation is checking cervical mucus and temping showing a bbt thermal shift after ov.

But as I have already said there is a bit of flexibility on when the test can be done. So going at 6dpo (if you are actually at that) is fine. I hope this helps.

thanks all, so much to learn

rainbow thats interesting about OPKs, they make it sound so straightforward on the packet! I had heard they weren't amazing so hadn't bothered, was using ewcm (want to temp too but taken ages to find the thermometer). But my gp was insistent that they were the only method he trusted, so I am using them too now. had ewcm defintely on same dat I got +ve on OPK, I was away on holiday at the time so not paying tons of attention, but generally only get ewcm for 2-3 days I think.

anyway, thankyou for putting my mind at ease that day 21 test needn't be done exactly 7dpo, hate blood tests so definately didn;t want to waste one
