Does everyone ovulate on day 14?

I hate these threads, I really do. I know there is nothing anyone can say except wait/take a test. But I want to talk about it and I can't tell anyone in RL.

Periods one day late. It could be nothing. I keep going to the loo to check. No preg symptoms at all. Slightly crampy tummy - which likely does mean periods on it way.

Last had unprotected sex 6 days after first day of LMP. Surely if I then OV 14 days after first day of LMP then the sperm would have to have been superman stylee to have survived 8 days?!

So its unlikely right?

I will test in a few days if nothing. But no point testing now. As a negative could be a false negative this early.

Everyone's different, some ovulate earlier, some later, it depends on your body. You should do a test.

tartyhighheels · 19/01/2010 23:21

mine is day 28 in 40 day cycle

strange but true...

IhateTheseThreads · 19/01/2010 23:23

You would think some sort of online prenancy test could be invented. Pee on the mouse and type this code to see if you are pregnant.

I think its normally 14 days before your next period iyswim. So if you have a 28 day cycle then it would usually be on day 14, but if you have a 35 day cycle its more likely to be day 21. But as the others say it can vary from person to person and from month to month.

Sperm can survive for around 72 hours. So if you had a short cycle, say only 22 days you could have sex on day 6, then ovulate on day 8 and still get pg.

Sazisi · 19/01/2010 23:30

I like the idea of an online pregnancy test - genius

afaik the norm is 12 to 14 days before menstruation, although you do get freaks like tartyhighheels, who I'm very jealous of by the way

IhateTheseThreads · 19/01/2010 23:35

I'm a very boring 28 day-er, so average! Just been for a pee again. Nothing.

So its highly unlikely I'm preg isn't it? Likely to just be that my periods feeling a bit slow because of January blues or something?

Ovulation can vary loads, not just between women but also sometimes from cycle to cycle...

Either you ov'd early, in which case (if you only BD'd on CD6) you are overdue and you will get a +ve on a HPT. OR, you ov'd late, so your period's not really late at all, your cycle is just a bit longer this month. You are right that sperm can't survive 8 days, I think 5 is the max.

I expect if you do a test now, you will get an accurate result. Hope you get the result you want

IhateTheseThreads · 20/01/2010 08:11

Thanks. Nothing today. First thing I did was run to the loo to check! Will buy a test later.

Really appreciate all the replies btw I know these threads are pointless, but have never had to start one before and so I understand the need for them now. I just want to talk about it!

My ovulation day varies - anything between day 9 and day 15 (I think - judging by EWCM only), but as sure as night follows day, af shows up 14 days after ovulation.

I know how you feel by the way. Af is due today for me.... and no sign so far. Keeping fingers crossed for you x x x

legallyblond · 20/01/2010 11:01

Oooh, and also, when my mother conceived me, she and my dad were (and yes, my mum LOVES giving me TMI!) using the temperature method of natural contraception (they're catholic) - so my mum had been taking her temps religiously for years and know when she ovulated etc and when, "as sperm only live for 5 days", was safe. Anyway, apparently, my mum SWEARS they last (ewww, parents!) did the deed 8 days before ovulation (mum is sure about when she ov'ed) and, somehow, the sperm did survive that long as I was conceived that month. The docs couldn't explain it but said that is can happen.

nancydrewrocks · 20/01/2010 11:09

The time between ov and AF is the luteal pahase and is rarely anything other than 12-14 days. It is the time from AF to ovulation that varies so wildly.

That being said some woman have luteal phases as short as 10 days or long as 16. It is very rare for there to be any greater difference.

if you have a regular cycle count back 12-14 days from AF to give yourself an idea as to when yopu ovulate.

mawbroon · 20/01/2010 11:26

As everyone else has said, it can vary enormously.

If the conditions are right for sperm, it can survive for up to a week. However if the conditions are not right for sperm, they die off within hours. Factors in this include the presence (or not) or EWCM and the acidity in the vagina.

Unless you have been checking EWCM and temping, you will be unable to know for sure when you ovulated, so until you find out for sure if you are pg or not, there is always that possibility.

I would really recommend reading Taking charge of your fertility by Toni Weschler. It explains it all and would put your mind at ease if you found yourself in this situation again.

Hope you get the result you want.

IhateTheseThreads · 20/01/2010 11:34

Just tested - neg. Bet it comes in an hour now after me buying the test!

Still nothing. I am thinking about wearing white linen trousers that will get it here.

OP posts:
sweetkitty · 20/01/2010 21:56

on the BFN

I am a 27 day cycle ovulate on CD15

Have conceived through sex on CD11 and CD18 though (only sex that month long story)

IhateTheseThreads · 20/01/2010 22:02

Am not really Would be a very difficult situation if I was. Not preg would be the easiest result by far, but if I am preg then will be delighted and praying for a sticky one. Cramps are still bad, so is headache and lower back pain.

stressheaderic · 20/01/2010 23:38

Sounds like she's on her way...

Although I never have backache ever...yet 9 months ago, was standing in queue in Asda thinking God my back is KILLING?!...and sure enough...baby now imminent.

Hope you get the result you truly want.

ihatethesethreads · 21/01/2010 13:48

Periods here Really awful cramps - on cocodamol and ibuprofen. Think its been saving up for an awful one. But I am pleased. It wasn't the right time - just about to start a new job etc.

Thanks everyone.

Pleased it has worked out the way you hoped. Not so good that it's a painful one though.
