Yes, my DH had a reversal. It was 6 years after the vas. It was a great success because I now have a 17 month old son! I am not young either - I was 41 when we conceived and nearly 42 when he was born.I'm 43 now and not ready to give up yet!
I did a huge amount of research on the net to find out what supplements we could take to improve our chances and also read all the literature I could get my hands on about conception, natural fertility etc.I also had regular acupuncture and took traditional Chinese herbs. I'm not sure if any of it made a difference, but I was willing to try it all!My Dh also took chinese herbs and I noticed a big difference (under the microscope) in the number of sperm after he took them for a month.
When we first went to see the urologist about a reversal he basically said due to our ages (my DH was 47 at the time) we should forget about the reversal and just go straight to ivf.My DH was not interested in IVF, so we went ahead with the reversal. If nothing else, I felt it meant we had given it our best shot.
Before he had the reversal(for about a month) I had him take high doses of vitamin C (can't remember how much, maybe 2000mg) because it is supposed to help with healing and scarring. He also took vit E after the op as it helps stop scar tissue. He also took something called pycnogenol which helps with healing. We both took a multi vitamin, fish oil,L-carnitine,selenium and CoQ10.
We are now taking Maca too which is supposed to help with fertility.
It is definately worth doing your own research to find out what works. When I asked the urologist about supplements and taking anti-inflamatories to stop scarring (which is what all the US docs prescribe{I'm in Australia})he said it wasn't necessary.I got the feeling that he was only concerned with doing the surgery and that he thought it would be a miracle if we had a baby!
Anyway, after 7 months of ttc, we got preggers! Our little boy is perfect and a great addition to our family (I had four kids before him).I don't regret it for a minute and my DH says the reversal makes him feel "whole" again, which I think is pretty important.
I hope this is some help to you.It seems to me you are both still young and should just go for it.You won't regret it.
BTW, I was told we had about a 70% chance of success when we had it done, but that statistic varies greatly depending on many factors including past proven fertility, age and ultimately if there is a return of sperm which isn't always guareteed depending on the originally surgery and scarring.
