agnus castus & breastfeeding?

Hi

To cut a long story short, I've always had irregular (almost non existent!) periods and I took agnus castus prior to conceiving my DD1 which I believe is what helped me to ovulate and therefore conceive.

I am still breastfeeding my 9 month DD and have not yet had a period.

We would like to start trying for our next and therefore want to know whether it is okay to take agnus castus whilst breastfeeding? There seems to be a lot of conflicting advise. I've seen on some websites that it helps with milk supply however on other websites that it should not be taken whilst breastfeeding.

I'm not overly worried if it drops my milk supply as I can either stop taking it or offer her expressed, however want to make sure there is no risk to my DD.

Thanks in advance.

Hi

Sorry I dont know whether agnus castas is ok whilst bfing but have you ever discussed your irregular, almost non existent periods with a doctor?
It's quite normal to not have periods whilst bfing for up to 24mths apparently but not normal when not bfing.
I have always had irregular and almost non existent periods and thought it was normal until we started TTC I then found out I had polycystic ovaries - which is really common - might be worth getting yourself checked??

Hi
My DD is 10 months and BF and I started taking Agnus Castus about 2 months ago as want to TTC #2. AF returned a fortnight ago (hooray!). I have not had any problems with milk supply. I also read up a lot and went with the advice on kellymom which said it was fine with BF. Hope this helps.

Hi

Littleknight - thanks for your message. I went to the doctors - they were pretty unhelpful. They took blood tests to check my hormone levels which were fine, therefore told me to start trying and go back after a year. I then looked online and tried agnus castus - had a period and then fell pregnant 6 weeks later! I think I was one of the lucky ones!

smallblackflowers - thanks. I also saw the advise on kellymom but saw contradictory advise elsewhere. I think I'll go for it... Did you have irregular periods prior to DD or did you just want to carry on feeding whilst trying? Good luck!

Thanks

Hi - I did have irregular periods prior to DD - was diagnosed with borderline PCOS. I bought the AC that I am taking now to sort them out but found out I was pg before taking any. Started taking them this time to kick start AF, which seems to have worked but may well be coincidence! Good luck to you too.
