I have a regular 28 day cycle, always OV on day 17. I have temped for 5 months and it never deviates.

This cycle we had sex on day 18 (not exactly planning on getting pg but not exactly avoiding it either IYSWIM!) ie we are not actively trying (or would have had sex on days leading up to and including OV as I know exactly when it is) but hey if it happened then very nice. Had loads of EWCM on days 15, 16 and 17. Right side pain on the afternoon of day 17. On day 18 my temp goes up as normal so I assume OV has been and gone and that's the night we had sex.

Anyway, AF did not arrive on day 1 which was last Sunday. My temps hadn't dropped much on the Saturday so I did a 1st Response (on the Saturday) = negative. I then did two on the Monday - the mid morning one showed the faintest of whispery +ve lines but the evening one showed nothing.

Still no AF so today went to the docs and their test showed -ve, mid morning. I did both a Clearblue and a cheapie internet one just now and both showed -ve.

Fine - but where's my period?!! Why would it have showed a faint positive earlier in the week and a negative now? Also I thought I had missed OV as temp went up - are you still fertile after this?

Is this what they call a chemical pg, and if it was, how long should it take for period to arrive, does anyone know?

TIA!

it depends on how concentrated your urine is

only test first thing in the morning

you could be pg - it took me over a week to get a + test with my DC1 & DC2

Hi,

My guess is that you are not always ovulating on day 17. It may well be around that time particularly if your cycle is clockwork but would not assume that it is day 17. Ovulation is not an exact science and it can occur earlier, later or not at all in any given cycle.

You may have had a temp rise in the second half of your cycle when an egg has not been shed. Even normally fertile women have the occasional anovulatory cycle and this may have been what has occured here.

LittlewhiskersCat · 04/12/2009 14:06

Thank you both for your responses

Attila, surely an anovulatory cycle is when you still have AF but haven't OV'd? I haven't had an AF yet you see (6 days late).

Eldon - I have been pg three times before (2x miscarriages, 1 DC) and all three times I have tested early and it has shown a distinct +ve pre-AF date, rising to a dark +ve no matter what time of day urine or test brand, from day AF expected. The thing is I had a faint +ve earlier in the week but now a -ve on three different brands of tests today.

If I have had a chemical pg, how long does AF take to arrive? anyone know? x

Update - Clearblue Digital (just ran out and bought one!) test says...................... Not pregnant.

Surely a four different tests, including the most sensitive test on the market, 6 days late, can't be wrong? (its driving me mad!)

Clearblue Digital is not the most sensitive test on the market
It is also mid afternoon

HPT FAQ

LittlewhiskersCat · 04/12/2009 14:53

I guess so, Eldon Ave - but still can't see why one of those four different tests wouldn't show a positive when I am 6 days late?

I am pretty sure of when I ov'd from temping, CM and side pain and I have a 28 day regular cycle - it never variates (well except for now of course!)

It's now 17dpo from when I thought I ov'd. Even if I ov'd on day 21 lets say for a massive change from the last 5 months, that would make it 14 dpo, usually long enough for an egg to implant and start showing up on tests.

Not to mention that I thought I had missed OV this month as I had all the signs leading up to day 17 as normal.

I will test tomorrow morning first thing with another CB Digital, cheapie internet, 1st response etc. Because if it's not showing up on a test but neither is AF showing up I perhaps should have a scan.

I was going to say chemical pregnancy but that makes no sense if you haven't had a period.

PlantASeedWatchItGrow · 04/12/2009 16:51

Just wanted to add that with DC1 I had a +tive as soon as I missed my period, but I have just today had my first BFP (DC2) and I am on CD53. I tested and tested with all brands (Clearblue, chemist own brand, superdrug etc) and all came back -tive until today!

Maybe wait a few more days? easier said than done, I know!

Good Luck

You can conceive having sex after ovulation. Yes the egg begins to deteriorate quite soon after release but to be safe you should avoid unprotected sex a couple of days after ovulation.

I think it's just a case of waiting a couple of days and testing again.

LittlewhiskersCat · 04/12/2009 19:23

Final update - AF has arrived this evening

I think what may have happened (totally unscientifically ) is that the egg was fertilised almost at the point of deterioration, on day 18 (having ov'd on day 17 as usual) and as such was not good enough to survive/implant properly.

Hence the feeble +ve 1 day late but ending up as -ve 6 days late.

Thanks for your posts/ideas anyway!

(LWC off to pour herself a stiff drink after this week's rollercoaster...)

Oh I am sorry to hear that. I had a chemical pregnancy and had very similar time frames for negative/positive tests and the turn up of af.

I imagine it's a relief to know what's happening.

LittlewhiskersCat · 04/12/2009 22:28

Thank you, SOH. I was Googling "late period negative test" before AF arrived and imagining all sorts of things ie low progesterone and thyroid problems etc, which could delay future TTC attempts, so I'm part disappointed yet part relieved that its not something more serious or long-term, if that makes sense.

Also because we weren't really trying this month I'm fortunately not feeling the loss as keenly had thrown ourselves into it. At least it shows we can conceive, of sorts . But I have a glass of wine in hand and we have nice things planned with our child this weekend, so its not all bad.
