Can two negative PG tests be wrong?

I am just a few months off starting my first course of IVF and was convinced that I was pregnant this month! Having PCOS means that periods are twice a year at the best, but recent medication has maybe helped my cycles. Anyway, I feel I may be pregnant as I have had my usual PM symptons all mixed up this time. I am suffering with daily enlarging boobs (much to hubbys delight) which are sore around the outsides of the nipples. Last night I had noticeable veins.

Apart from that I have done 2 Asda tests, which have both been negative, and I have worked out that if I were pg it would only be about 4 or 5 weks .... could I be getting false negatives, or is this just wishful thinking??

Beckif, I don't know the answer really but a Boots own brand test gave me a positive when another brand was giving me a negative so maybe worth a try?

If you have tested earlier than you realise (ie. ovulation was later than you think) then you could be a bit early - worth leaving it a week (if you can, otherwise at least a few days) and try again if you still have no period.

My test came up almost negative (so pale it was negotiable whether I was imagining it) on day 36ish and I was convinced I was pregnant despite the date. It was only positive by around 39/40 ish as I had a longer cycle than I thought. It was torture waiting an extra 4 days but worth it in the end. I have no idea if you are pregnant or not but can understand the stress of not being sure. Not wanting to get too excited and yet also wanting to buy every test under the sun and try every 4 hours...whilst also running to the loo all the time just to check to see if your period has arrived after all. Stick in there and I have my fingers crossed for you.

www - I have heard that Boots is much more sensitive in practise than the usual Clearblue so sounds a good idea.

I appreciate all the input, and I think I will do a final test next weekend, using the Boots own brand that everyone has faith in. That way I'll know for sure, and know it's just this mean body of mine playing tricks. It just would of been so beautiful if we had conceived naturally :-(

I managed an early negative after an IVF cycle - the clinic had told me to test too early. So having thought that the cycle had failed I tested again a week later to find that it hadn't!

I too have PCOS and the very irrgeluar cycles are a real pain. I hope that you have been successful naturally, but even if you haven't IVF is often successful with PCOS women - we have 2 wonderful sons from 4 IVF attempts - expensive but worth it!

I have had two negative tests and still been pregnant. I have also done a test and thought it was negative and later on looked again and it was positive but very feint, had to look really hard to see it and thought I was imagining it but both these times I miscarried. However I'm pregnant again now and did three tests which were negative, then one very feint positive and 5 days later a dark positive and this pregnancy goping very well

Update Well I wasn't pregnant as I came on eventually. Still not convinced that I wasn't pregnant as I felt a way I have never felt before. Ahyway, fertility starting soon (we hope) so wish me luck.

Good Luck Becki!
I hope you get preggers SOON!

Serephina · 17/06/2003 19:53

Becki, I think you may very well have be right about being pregnant - lots of pregnancies fail so early that they just seem like late periods. Sore breasts was certainly the most obvious sign for me of being pregnant! Sorry that it didn't work out for you this time around but crossing my fingers for you for next time!
Lots of love, Serephina

splash · 19/06/2003 13:10

done the boots test this afternoon and it was neg, i give up!! i wish i would just come on so that i will stop buying these tests. still hopeful though.

Hi splash, how long are your cycles normally and are they regular?

Eeek · 19/06/2003 14:04

it's possible you had a biochemical pregnancy only - might be worth asking your clinic.

I've PCO, went for IVF and eventually (4 goes) got gorgeous ds. One of the attempts gave me a biochemical pregnancy where I got pregnancy symptoms (sore boobs, much enhanced sense of smell) for a few days before it stopped. The bad news is that you aren't pg. The good news is that it increases your chances over all.

BTW if there's any chance of having twins from your IVF get them to put you on high dose folic acid before you start. The normal 400mg isn't really enough for twins or more but not all clinics give it automatically.

This is the first month after the pill, i had a period after the pill and this is the next cycle. used to have pcos. till 3 years ago had a laparascopy on my ovaries, which seemed to sort things out. this is my first proper cycle since jan 01!! had ds breastfed till 5 mths then fll pregnant again and so i still never had a period as i got pregnant as soon as i stopped. baby died, late mis 18 weeks. I have been on the pill for 10 months and -this is the first cycle since. usually they are about 28-39, but i was def sure i ov at day 14.i looked at the test again how faint does it have to be? i think i maybe imagining one now.
