when can i test for preg???

i am going to explode if i have to wait much longer!! my cycle is all over the shop. last one was 30 days, previous one was 21 days? last one started 17/9, so when could i test to see if i am with child with a reasonable chance of accuracy?? seriously the days are going so slowly that i think i'll go mad before i get to there.....

hiya!!

well, i dont know if you know, but ovulation normally happens around the 14th 15th day of your cycle... so count 14/15 days from the day you started your last period.... this would be the day you conceive if you're lucky! so probably 2 weeks after this.... so i'm guessing 4 weeks after your last period... always counting the first day of your period as day 1 of your cycle... hope this isnt confusing!!! get a test that can pick up hcg levels early! which i guess is most these days!!

dont forget that you won't show as pg until 9 DPO usually tho so i reckon the earliest is really from day 24 if you ovulated on day 15....

Unfairly and entirely unreasonably ovulation happens about 14 days before the next cycle, so to predict when it is likely to be is difficult for somebody with an irregular cycle unless you are very familiar with your own body and things like changes in your cervical mucus at the time of ovulation.
I suppose you could test now soon assuming your cycle might be another short one like the one before, but I would definetely retest after 1 week if period has not arrived.

well i know i ovulated last week (tues and weds - i tested from day 2 as my cycle is so odd and i missed it the previous month) so i'm thinking that if i bought a couple of first response tests on friday (thank goodness they're on special offer at the mo!) i could potentially get an accurate reading then???? (it took all my self control not to buy them yesterday, if i had i would definitely have used both of them by now!) lordy i hate this waiting!

MummyLau, not wishing to be rude and to contradict but the 14 day rule is misleading. While the time from ovulation to period starting is typically the same for most women (meaning each women's time from OV to AF is roughly the same although it will change from woman to woman), the time from 1st day of cycle to OV can change dramatically from month to month caused by stress, changes in this and that and just because.

The 14 day rule is used on the pregnancy wheel and is based on an "average" 28 day cycle. booboobunny is having irregular cycles so it's very unlikely indeed that she's OV on day 14.

Booboo, if you know you're ovulating then the date of OV to the date AF is due tends to be the same for you each month, so, if you keep an record of the date you OVd, and if you didn't catch this month the date AF starts, you will know next month when you can test, assuming you know next month when you OV.

thanks all, just wish it wasn't so confusing. i really don't want to test too early and risk a false positive - obviously i would still continue to test a few times after anyway, but the misery i'd feel after the negative makes it not worth taking the risk. i soooo want it to be positive. not helped by the husband being convinced i am with child already just because we did the deed at the right time!!! (he is welsh and apparently the welsh are just very virile!!! - i have given up expecting logic of reason from him mind!) if it hasn't worked this month i am well stocked up with ovulation tests. i am on a mission!

Boohoobunny, if you know when you ovulated you could reasonably start testing from about 13 dpo onwards. While testing earlier is tempting and hard to resist the disappointment and stress of possible false negatives is something you could do without. Also then you don't waste money on HPT's as well.

False positives are very, very rare.

Ovulation predictor kits are often inaccurate and misleading.

And that day 14 ovulation, 28 day cycle thing. That textbook should be burned.

There's a lot to be said for knowing your own body and understanding the reproductive cycle.

I used to ovulate on day 19 on a 24/5 day cycle so the '14 day rule' certainly didn't apply to me!

When my periods returned after I had dd, my luteal phase was 5 days so I was effectively infertile. 10-14 days is the average and anything above 10 days is considered enough time for conception.

ok i had mirena out 1 sep . Bled 5th - 14 th . So af due 4th oct right .
Neg preg test 2 days ago but think i ov about 10 days ago !
Nothing but wait and see i suppose really
