I'm supposed to be going for a 21 day blood test tomorrow to check if I'm ovulaating, as I've been TTC for over a year now and Dr wants to run some tests on me and DH.

But I'm very confused now as I'm still getting EWCM today. Been having EWCM for over a week now, so think I haven't ovlated yet. This has never happened before!!! So typical it would happen the month I'm going for tests

Shall I still go for my test? As I'm sure it will now show I'm not ovulating. Or should I go next week? But that will be too close to my period (due next saturday).

ARGHHHH

EWCM?

Zoomum · 06/08/2009 21:39

Does that mean Egg White Cervical Mucus.....just go for the test, nothing to lose. This is just the start of the process anyway and you will prob have cycle monitoring as well, so plenty other chances to have blood tests

sazlocks · 06/08/2009 21:43

Go for the test. There would be no point going next week. As zoomum says this is the start of a process and most GPs will want to do another one next month anyway.

knickerlass · 06/08/2009 21:45

Ok thanks
I didn't realise they would want to do repeat tests.

Hi knickerlass, I think you should go and have the test. I've been for loads of blood tests and I'm always suprised by the results. Some months when I was sure had ovulated the blood test said not. One month I had to have progesterone tests on CD 21, 28 & 45! Talk to your Doc and tell them your concerns and I think they might suggest a second one next week. If you haven?t ovulated yet then you might have a longer cycle this month. Hope that helps. Good luck.

Hello again, it's knickerlass under new name.

Well I went for test on 7th Aug and passed

progesterone = 34
LH = 8
FSH = 3.5

Doc says all fine

ONLY........

My period still hasn't arrived, it was due on Sat but is now 3 days late. Which suggests I DID ovulate late as I originally thought (possibly day or 2 before I had the test).

So I'm very confused. Would my results be this good if I had only just ovulated? Or am ovulting much earlier than I think I am?

kitesarefun · 18/08/2009 21:27

Forgot to add, I'm defo not preggers as did a test this morning and it was negative.

I noted your results; what day in the cycle did you have those tests done?.

Normally LH and FSH comparison testing is done around day 2 in the cycle; progesterone is usually measured on day 21.

Your LH and FSH are out of sync if that was done on day 2; these should be the same. They can look okay if the results are not compared against each other.

Also if you have been ttc for a year plus without success then you should be referred to a subfertility unit. These sort of problems are outside a GPs general remit.

It is also quite possible to actually have periods without ovulating.

Hello Attila

My bloods were taken at day 21. My GP says that my progesterone results shows I'm ovulating, is this right?

I don't know what the LH or FSH mean, or why my GP tested for them on day 21. I did ask her about a day 3 blood test, but she said I only needed a day 21 test at this stage.

Hi kitesarefun,

re your comments:-

"My bloods were taken at day 21. My GP says that my progesterone results shows I'm ovulating, is this right?"

Well that month would confirm ovulation took place if the result was 34. But it would not mean that ovulation was happening on a regular basis, just that particular month.

"I don't know what the LH or FSH mean, or why my GP tested for them on day 21. I did ask her about a day 3 blood test, but she said I only needed a day 21 test at this stage".

Argh, silly doc!!!. It is no point whatsoever in measuring LH (luteinising hormone) and FSH (follicle stimulation hormone) on day 21!. That's far too late in the cycle: LH and FSH are two vitally important hormones as they both kickstart the ovulation process so this has to be tested far earlier - around day 3 in the cycle. Would therefore disregard that particular LH and FSH result.

Also doc should start the ball rolling re referral to a subfertility unit seeing as you've been ttc for 12 months plus without success. Is GP going to do this, I would ask for a referral sharpish and not let this particular person mess you around any longer (you will likely end up being referred anyway at some stage. Best to get that ball rolling now). This is now something for the specialists to be looking at.

kitesarefun · 19/08/2009 20:40

Thanks for your reply Attila.

Do you know what my LH and FSH levels are supposed to be on day 21? Or are the results totally meaningless?

I suppose if my progesterone shows I've ovulated then my LH and FSH levels on day 3 will show the same, so there's no point doing both (from my doctor's POV)?

I'm about 95% sure I'm ovulating every month anyway. I suspect if I do have a fertility problem it's due to my previous operations.

DH is having his test next week (semen analysis) and then we have an appointment at the subfertility clinic in September. I had to really push to be referred, as GP wanted to leave it until we'd been TTC for 2 years
