I think they look for stuff like mobility and amount of useful sperm iyswim.

OracleInaCoracle · 25/07/2009 21:00

what ledodgy said.

They'll check five things;

Volume: should be 2-5mls
Concentration: more than 20 million per ml
Motility: more than 50% progressively motile
Form: more than 30% normal appearance
White blood cells: less than 1 million per ml

Most clinics suggest two samples several weeks apart as counts vary.

I assume he'll donate at the hospital. When my DH had to give, the local hospital provided a "wanky porn room" where he could go with the props (jazz mags and videos) were laid on. He found it a LOT easier than spanking off at home, then having to do a mercy dash across town in 20 mins max with the sample clamped between his legs to keep it at body temp and drop it off at the andrology lab.

sunburntats - what GorgonsGin said is correct about what they are looking for. She is also right about the 'mercy dash' part. Better to produce the sample at the hospital than at home IMO although I did both.

I wrote (as EvenBetaDad) about the whole varied experience of giving semen samples during IVF here on this thread.

If DH is worried or embarrased get him to have a read. It really is much worse in the mind that in actuality. Hope all works out well.

GorgonsGin · 25/07/2009 22:13

sunburntats - I don't think the Bupa nurses lend a hand

DH produced his samples at our local NHS hospital. We are doing IVF/ICSI there ( 2 x cycles so far)

Good luck with the results and let us know how the tests go. My DH has a count of less than 2million/ml, so less than 10% of the minimum, which is not great, but hope you get a better result.
