I know there are some studies that have been done?

Any experience?

i used to work in a salon that did botox and this happened to a client of mine...she went on to have a healthy pregnancy. It depends on the frequency of treatment and the amount you have done, however as most treatment is localised there isnt a risk to the unborn child

It was the first ever treatment. For slight frown lines but mainly for Hyperhydrosis.

do you know how many mls you had?

whatwouldhappen · 21/07/2009 16:55

This was not for me. I have been sent frantic texts from my friend. She didn't say how many mls she had. Would there be such a thing as a safe limit?

Worse thing is she has kept this a secret from her husband.

there isnt any firm research suggesting its bad, but then again there is non stating its safe too. I would suggest calling your gp if worried and especially if you find you have an upset tummy because one of the bacteria in botox is the one found to cause food poisoning. If you were going to react its normally within the forst 48 hours.

I have always thought that although they advise you not to have botox whilst pregnant, it is a localised treatment
It is not systemic (otherwise we would all ber very sick ourselves) so it shouldn't be a problem if you were pregnant
I suspect drinking loads of alcohol or taking a medicine orally would be more problematic as that is systemic

sorry x post your friend...she should be fine. Not a lot of product is used for lines in the face.

whatwouldhappen · 21/07/2009 17:05

I know it sounds like one of those cheesy cliches, it really is my friend and I know that she was having it done for armpits but sounded like she got talked into face also, as she hadn't mentioned it. I have asked how many mls were adminstered.

She is a bit frantic and talking about aborting because she fears the worst and that she has caused massive damage.

She is in shock.

I have told her to speak to her GP in the morning. I can only find studies about rabbits and mice online so not much use, that's why I thought I would try here.

Ill send you some links and i want being rude higlighting your friend i really do believe you. Tell her to call nhs direct if she doesnt want to wait until the morning

for some reason i cant link...but google is botox safe in pregnancy and there are studies and a report from abc new which makes an interesting read...

barbie1 · 21/07/2009 17:09

wasnt being rude

whatwouldhappen · 21/07/2009 21:13

I didn't think you were being rude. I was laughing about it, when I read it back!

It really is not me.

(I am protesting far too much aren't I?)

Agree with the others, botulism is a poison and were it to enter the blood stream and system it would make you ill. As it is localised to the area injected, I would not have thought the developing foetus to be at risk.
Alcohol would be far more risky in my opinion and millions of women drink at in the period before they discover they are pregnant with no ill effects. I hope she can be reassured and not make any drastic decisions, maybe suggest she discusses it with her GP and get some reassurance.

xx

If she had a Botox injection just before you conceived, or perhaps before she realised that she is pregnant in your first trimester, the risk of it harming your baby is low. A single injection should not contain enough Botox to circulate around her body and reached her baby. If she conceives the botox treatment she had to wait six months before trying, because after then botox will be out of her system.
