i estimated that i will have been about 4.5 weeks when i had that scan so too early to show anything up, consistant with the 1st bhcg levels.

When I had a scan at 6.5 weeks there was a discernible mass on one ovary. I was told that this was the eruption site of the egg which had been fertilised.

Was anything explained to you about the mass? Did the sonographer tell you what they thought it was, or refer to a consultant?

deanychip · 30/03/2009 17:29

Doc today said what you have just said georgi.
She said that this was the probable origin of the "mass" like a small clot where the egg had been popped out of the ovary. Felt better for that tbh.

Have you had another scan today or just seen the doc to discuss the earlier one? Was it transvaginal or on the tummy? Can see much more through the vagina at this stage.

When I had my scan at 6.5 weeks I was fortunate in that it was done by an obstetrician (private) so she was able to explain as we were going along. She did warn me before we started that we would be lucky to see a heartbeat at 6.5 weeks but we did. The sac was minute though, I think 5.8mm or something ridiculous like that.

It all sounds positive for you. Good luck.

PS There's a lovely bunch of ladies on the due in November thread if you haven't found them yet.

During my EP scan I only saw a yolk sac with no heartbeat I had miscalculated my EDD. They found a 8cm cyst on my left ovary, which was monitored throughout my pregnancy, I could have had it removed surgically but they would have took the ovary so they could get it out quicker so as to minimise the risk to the baby, I decided against it, they scanned me 6 weeks post birth and the cyst was gone they said it probably burst during labour.

Good luck

Hi Deany

I'm sorry you're having a tough time with this - it can be a total rollercoaster.

It is possible sometimes to see a sac in the uterus at 4.5 weeks, but a lot depends on the skill of the person doing the scanning. If you were out on your dates by even a day or two then you could well see nothing. TBH I am surprised they scanned you this early purely because IME early scans can raise as many questions as they answer.

The HCG results are promising. When you have your next scan your HCG should be over 2000 and so any uterine pregnancy should then be visible.

As for the ovarian mass, it could be a cyst. As others have said this is normal. I have had 2 ectopics (both very close to the ovary) and in neither case could the pregnancy be identified this early, whereas I know that they can see a cyst at this stage.

I hope the next scan gives a clearer (and good) result.
