smear test while ttc?

I'm due my next smear, but we're also desperately ttc, so my question is.. will a smear interfere with the ttc process (not that I will avoid smear, life more important etc etc) and can I go for a smear if I'm ttc, ie will all that sperm swimming around in there interfere with getting a proper result?

Are you meant to refrain from sex for 48 hours before a smear? I don't know if that is correct but it would certainly be polite!

I really doubt a smear is going to intefer, when I was ttc DS I had to have a post-coital test done and that was like the most invasive painful smear ever. I got pregnant a month later. If you were already pregnant there might be the tiniest, most minute risk of MC but frankly I'd rather have the smear. If you're trying to conceive you owe it to yourself to get in tip top gynae health.

Yes you can go for a smear when you are TTC.

Even if there is sperm there, it wouldn't interfere with smear test, which looks at your own cells. And these are very different than sperm and wouldn't be confused.

Thanks for that gmama... I know you're supposed to have it mid-cycle, perhaps I could arrange it for cd12 and start my bd fest afterwards. Would that be ok? I do agree that the smear is more important, and that waiting one more month isn't as important as my health, but I was wondering if we could still ttc the month I had my smear done.

If you are concerned you could make your appointment for the week after AF.

I ahd gynae problems when I was trying to concieve #1 so I was having 6 monthly smears, so I just made them for the week after AF due and then I knew when I was having it, it wouldn't be possible for me to have been pregnant. As soon as I got pregnant an alert stayed on my records and I had one 8 weeks after giving birth.

As for abstaining from sex 48hrs before I have never heard of that before, but I avoided doing it around smear test for my own reasons.

OH nunnie, thanks for that. I assume as you were having gynae investigations the docs were happy for you to have your smears done a week after af, and not later in your cycle. I hope everything's ok with you now.

I am on 3 yearly smears now which is the first time since 16

I am currently on my 18th month soon to be 19th month of trying for #2.

Docs never seemed to mind me having smear done just after AF, I only had one abnormal one in my ttc time very early on, and that was dealt with ASAP, and after that all negative.
It took me 4 years to get pregnant and if I had not attended for my smears in that time, I dread to think what would have happened.

Sounds like you caught whatever it was in good time. Glad to hear things are all well now. I'm a bit late in getting my smear now, of course the Jade story has reminded me. Never had an abnormal one but after pregnancy and a couple of miscarriages it really is time...
