Hi, I have PCOS and I've been on Clomid for 4 months with no sucess, I'm on the maximum dose. I've been perscribed Metformin which is a diabetic drug to help the Clomid work. Have any of you tried this drug and did it work ?
I'd be interested to hear. It's ment to help you loose weight too so if it's good, can I be on them for life ?

I have PCOD and used metformin for 2-3 years prior to my pregnancy. It was not for infertility though, was mainly for weight gain and possible insulin resistance. It really helped and I was size 8 when I got pregnant. Pregnancy went really well too but unfortunately I put on weight in postnatal period when I was struggling with breastfeeding, and I couldn't restart metformin yet as I am still breastfeeding.
You can be on them for long time. People with diabetes use it for life long sometimes (it is originally a diabetes medication). They usually need to check your kidney and liver functions yearly.
I really did like metformin but 500mg tablets caused diarrohea and I had to use slow releasin ones (850 mg).

Just wanted to add one more thing. After using it approximately 2.5 years, specialists and the SpR in ultrasound department, could not find any signs of PCOD, even the scan of ovaries were normal. They said if they did not know my previous results, they would say I did not have PCOD. It was that good, metformin, in my case.

Lots of PCOS women's experiences with metformin on the Verity message board here.

Thanks everyone. I've been for a second scan today and I have produced a decent sized egg, so that's great! I won't get the Metformin now though. I'd better cancel all those size 8 dresses.
I asked if reducing or cutting out sugar from my diet would do the same thing and she said yes, it'd really help. I'm going to do that as I have far too much sugar anyway. It'll be hard though as I have a sweet tooth. If you know a good artificial sweetner please let me know.
