okay then, if you are unsure about cycle day (what is your best guess?) can you bear to leave it until after the weekend?

gingertoo · 26/02/2009 12:28

Oh bless you - I'm in similar situ - I do know that my af due on Tues but I'm desperate to test....... I spent ages fighting with myself in front of the pg test shelf this morning (store security were starting to look at me, I was there that long!)I decided against it mainly, like you say, for cost reasons - the ones that promised a result before af due date were stupidly expensive.
Going to try to wait til after weekend so don't mind keeping you company on the wait if you, like

totalmisfit · 26/02/2009 15:10

hold out till af is late. i did 2 early tests last month and my ego took a real bashing when i got BFN.

not saying this will happen to you, but best to take up a time consuming activity that requires you to focus, to stop you obsessing on it... i can recommend teaching yourself to play the guitar! works for me (just about)

brettgirl2 · 26/02/2009 18:11

If you test now and get a positive you may or may not be PG (because bean may not implant properly - this is the case in up to 50% of TTC months)

If you leave it then the test will give you the answer!

dancingqueeen · 26/02/2009 18:52

take the lesson from me. I tested (probably a day or so early) today because had been feeling nauseous for a few days, BFN , but it hasn't put my mind at rest one way or another at all, as I know it might be for real or i might have just tested too early. it really is a waste of money to test until period is due or late. hang on in there! (wish i had!)

brettgirl2 - hCG (the hormone tested for by preg. tests) only starts to be made once implantation has already taken place. It's made by cells from the chorion which surrounds the ovum and developing placenta, and it can only reach the mother's bloodstream (and therefore be picked up in tests) once implantation allows it to.
It is possible to test too early and get a BFN if 1) implantation hasn't taken place yet (usually 6-10 days post-conception), or if implantation has taken place but hCG levels are still too low to be picked up (usually before period is due).
(Sorry for the essay!!!)

I have managed to resist today.

Thank you for the tips. I will dust off the guitar for the rest of the week.

If you test too early it picks up chemical pgs, which are extremely common. Therefore, you get a positive test but it is too early for it to be secure. It happens loads on here, people get excited because they get a faint pos, then three days later they have a period (or very early miscarriage)

I would personally never test less than a week after my period is due, I don't think there is any point.

babyboom1979 · 26/02/2009 21:52

I would have to agree and have stopped testing early after my gyne strongly advised me against it. He confirmed what Brettgirl said -- 50% of fertilised embryos either pass right through you or do not implant properly, the former of which can result in a chemical pregnancy (i.e. you get a positive HPT and a few days later your period arrives around the time it was due). Better to deal with the nerves and avoid any heartbreak.

We are all in the same boat -- the wait is so hard!

Good luck to you.

do not test! join us on the step away from the first response thread. hpts are incredibily inaccurate before your period is due. wait for as long as possible. much better to get a BIG fat + than one you have to strain to see.
