Actually what I really want is twins(!) - DD3 and DS1, but failing that would love a DS for my DH who really needs a little pal as both DDs are proper little pink madams who loathe football etc..So - what are all the myths and legends and does anything really work? Obviously, we are TTC because we want a third DC, girl or boy, and if we are lucky enough to get pregnant then we will adore whoever comes along, but thought some new TTC-a-boy ideas might spice it up a little and maybe get us girls some Saturday afternoons to ourselves ...!

My dh will kill me for divulging this ....me and his ex wife are very similar in build and diet.....with her he had daughters 3 of them ........no changes to his diet or lifestyle he meets me (after his divorce) we have 3 sons - now this interested a greek friend of ours desperate for a son after lots of questions we cAme to the result- when first married he wore 'pants'/y fronts when he met me it was boxer shorts??

I dunno if thats what gave us boys etc would it be rude to ask what pants your dh wears?

Frasersmum123 · 22/02/2009 15:06

Oh my gosh Nickschick - you could have something there.

I have a DH who used to wear horrid, horrid boxer shorts, and we had 2 DS's/ Just before his 30th Birthday I bought him some nicer new ones and threw all the old horrid ones away. The ones I bought are like Y-fronts but a bit longer IYKWIM, and now we have a DD!

I had my dd and my ex wore pants, had a ds with my dh who wears boxers.
It's something to do with the temperature that his swimmers are kept at so they say.

Also, male swimmers apparently swim stronger so reach the egg first but don't last as long as female swimmers. If you go with this theory then you bd on the day of ovulation, or the night before so that it's more boy swimmers there to meet the egg.

Of course, it's all hit and miss!

I'm most intrigued by this underwear theory. I remember reading the male sperm are quicker, but smaller and weaker than the larger, female sperm. So perhaps being kept at a higher temperature kills off the little male sperm?

scarlotti · 22/02/2009 21:51

It is fascinating - I didn't realise the boy sperm were smaller. Guess that's why they can get there quicker, not as large, but also why they don't last as long!

I also have 2 DDs and want a DS - I am going for the theory of BDing on the day of ovulation and abstaining for the days leading up to ovulation - am using an OPK for this. Also having a salty diet to increase alkalinity - more favourable to boy sperm. But no luck yet, and I will probably get bored very soon and just BD any old time.

scarlotti · 23/02/2009 09:27

Exactly, I think it's a fun theory but in reality it's a lottery!

Breedinglikeone · 28/02/2009 21:11

Baggy knickers for DH and preBD pretzels for me then! How much salt do you have to eat?

To Get A Boy (According to Shettles):

Time intercourse as close to ovulation as possible: The idea is that since the Y-chromosome sperm are faster than the X-chromosome sperm, there will be more Y-chromosome sperm who reach the egg, making it more likely that a Y-chromosome carrying sperm will fertilize the egg.

Abstain from intercourse for four to five days prior to ovulation. Have intercourse only just at the time of ovulation and just before.

Have intercourse that allows for deep penetration. Shettles recommends rear-entry (aka, ?doggy-style?). The idea is that the sperm will be deposited closer to the cervix where cervical fluid is most friendly to the Y-chromosome sperm and where the ?boy sperm? are more likely to survive since there is less distance to travel.

Men avoid tight clothes: heat kills off both types of sperm, but will kill off the less protected, smaller Y-chromosome sperm faster, according to Shettles.

Women have an orgasm: According to Shettles, female orgasm increases the alkaline secretions in the vagina that are favorable to the Y-chromosome carrying sperm. Shettles recommends having an orgasm before or at the same time as the male partner.

For both boys and girls you can also make subtle alterations to diet:

Diet high in potassium and sodium for a boy.
Diet high in calcium and magnesium for a girl.
