Please help!! I have PCOS and last period was Christmas time. I have been having sore bb's and a few cramps and today did an OPK which went immediately positive with a darker test line than control line. Did another and it was the same. What does this mean??
I would love a baby but am due to get married in September talk about timing!!

no, I don't think it is the same as an HPT, it measures a different hormone..I personally get cramps etc at ovulation, so that's probably what it is, IMO.

HI RFCMummy,

OPK's measure LH.

Using OPK's if you are diagnosed with PCOS is unfortunately both a waste of time and effort.

Please do not use OPK's if you have PCOS. I will explain why below.

A large number of women with PCOS have an elevated level of LH in relation to FSH (these two hormones kickstart the ovulation process); the kit therefore is reading that excess. They do give false positive results in these particular circumstances. This is likely what is happening with your good self. These kits also work on the assumptions that women have one rise in LH every month and that such a rise is immediately followed by ovulation. Both of these are simply not true.

If you have PCOS it may take longer to conceive due to lack of periods and associated problems with ovulation and you may need some medical assistance in order to conceive. Not every single PCOSer needs help to conceive but many do; forewarned is forearmed. I note as well you have not had a period since Christmas. I would also try and stay within the correct weight range for your height as excess weight can exacerbate PCOS symptoms.

www.verity-pcos.org.uk is a good website for PCOSers as it is very informative. I would suggest you look at that too.

PCOS should be managed by a gynae rather than a GP - you should be referred to such a person immediately when you are wanting to conceive. Do not take no for an answer.

any other questions just ask

Attila

I am in state of immense shock. I have a 3 years old and a 20 month old and was planning my wedding!!! I now I am really lucky to be able to get pregnant so easily especially with PCOS but I am just in shock and don't know what to do. I am sure I will feel better when it has sunk in and I guess I can put the wedding back a month or so....
