..... You start to produce HCG? I have heard 2 conflicting answers. One is when sperm meets egg and the other is when embryo implants. Does anybody know which part of the body produces it? Is it the ovaries.

This question is more out of curiosity but I have had lots of faint/barely there lines in my time TTC an I'm wondering if it's because the embryo fails to implant.

Thanks in advance for your answers ladies.

afaik the levels of hgc only become high enough to be detectable by a test once the fertilised egg has implanted, which is usually around 7-10 days after fertilisation.

Many newly implanted eggs do fail to develop, in which case this usually results in a period happening at around the normal time (called a 'chemical' pregnancy). There would be a window of a few days when a test would show positive, but will then later show negative when the embryo stops developing and hgc levels fall.

As to the reason for failure to develop, I think there are several possible causes, the most common of which are genetic defects within the fertilised egg, but it can also be related to hormonal problems such as insufficient progesterone buildup to maintain the womb lining.

This site has lots of good info - check out the faq sections for hpt tests:

i think implantation too - have needed to know this stuff too in ttc my lovely dc. however, i think to start with it is in tiny levels, thus pg tests only start to show properly pos at 4-6wks.
Good luck.
