My sister has been told her embryos arn't viable

My sis has had IVF (she has been trying for a baby for at least 7 years) she was about 7 weeks pregnant.
She went for a scan today that said the the pregnancies are not viable.
I'm confused I dont know what not viable means.
I am also devastated, my sister would be a wonderful mother crys
Is there any hope?
Could the non viable scans have been wrong?

So the scan wouldnt have detected a heart beat and thats why they arnt viable?
Could there be a heart beat detected later say in week?
Sorry Im desperately upset for my sister, shes always wanted to be a mother and has been trying for 8 years and had 3 miscarriage already.

I am very sorry to read about your sister's non viable pregnancy. Basically the embryo for some reason will not go to term, it is unlikely that the scan is wrong. I sincerely hope that your sister, not just to say yourself, will receive support at this time. Your sister may want to contact the Miscarriage Association at some point when she feels able.

Not the news I wanted Attila but thank you for your reply.

I had talked to my sis earlier this year about my being a surrogate for her. She told me that the fertility clinic wouldnt be able to do that.
I have only been pregnant once the result being DD. If I could help Id like to do so.
Does anyone have any idea how IVF and surrogacy works?

Sorry if I have found the wrong forum on mumsnet but Im really sad that few have come to this thread to offer myself of my sister support.

When I read the title I assumed it meant that they weren't viable to implant not that she had gone through having them put in and it hasn't worked.

I know very little but hugs, it must be awful for her and her dh and the wider family.

If you want more info on surrogacy perhaps start a new thread asking about it?

just logged on and saw your post. I am so sorry for your sisters sad news. I was in the same position a couple of years ago. Did the sonographer really use the phrase " your embryo is not viable"? If so this is quite insensitive, almost brutal. Did they detect a heart beat? I would have thought they would have given more information. Is she going for a second scan in a weeks time? I ask this as I know a woman from another forum who had the most horrendous news from a (later)scan, but all turned out well. I am not trying to give false hope here but imho I do think it is worth having another scan and a more detailed discussion.

After my 1st IVF treatment, I found out at 8 week scan I had had a missed miscarriage. I was devastated and had to wait a further 10 days for another scan to confirm. I ended up having a d&c. I had 3 months off work. However, further treatment resulted in twin girls. All I can say is that after the elation of IVF working and getting a positive result, this outcome can feel too hard to bear.

I hope your sister has the strength to come through this and continue on her journey to become a mum.

Earlier I had a talk with my brother he thinks my sis had told the sonographer that she was 7 weeks pregnant counting back to her last period IYSWIM.
But actually the embryo's were implanted exactly 5 weeks before the scan. Is five weeks early to detect a heartbeat?
Belgianbun said her DD's heartbeat was detected at 6 weeks 6 days.

Sorry for another post, I so dont want to give up hope.

Have you spoken to your sister ? For her own peace of mind she needs to understand exactly what her position is in order to move on, whatever the outcome. I would imagine that the hospital would/should have discussed with her what the next stage would be, if the embryos are not viable.
If she is unsure that the dates were correctly given, then she should really go for another scan and get someone to explain fully to her, what is happening and if they are not viable, then why not.
So sorry your family is going through this. It does sound like your sister has a lovely supportive family to help her.

aww, i am so sorry to hear about your sister ER.

i don't think anyone can really say if the scan could have been wrong without knowing exactly why they said that the embryos weren't viable. there are many things they could have picked up, aside from the heartbeat, that would indicate that.

I hope she gets some good news though, and if not, that she has the strength to get through this
