Supposing I ovulated this morning at 10am (don't think I did but just supposing) and supposing my egg lasts 12 hours expiring at 10pm. If I had sex at 9pm would that hour be enough time for the sperm to go and find the egg?

I have heard of people conceiving BD-ing 12 hours after ovulation so I think it's possible. I think the egg can last 12 - 24 hours, so if you get a fast swimmer it should be possible. There is a theory called O+12 where you conceive a girl - google it and there is quite a lot of info. Hope this helps and good luck.
PS do you know that precisely when you OV? I wish I did!

I am not sure it would.

I've read that sperm need to be inside you for a few hours before they undergo a chemical change needed for them to penetrate the egg (called "capacitation"). This is why it is best to have sex in the day before ovulation. I could be wrong though!

I think an egg can last a bit longer than 12 hours. I think 24 at the outside, although of course it is impossible to know how long any one particular egg will last.

Thanks - it's all hypothetical as no idea when I ovulate (well yes to the day but not to the hour) - I was just interested. x

Hello yellowflowers! when a woman ovulates, her egg will last for exactly 24 hours... if the sperm do not reach the egg within this time, then the egg will release and you will the get your period for that month.

Eggs last 24 hours, sperm up to 4 days...so yes

Eggs last up to 24 hours but it can be between 6-12hours. Mrs Happy is right about capacitation- also if interested look up the acrosome reaction. I have a feeling the shortest time a sperm can be prepared to fertilise an egg after ejaculation is 30mins but more like a couple hours (but i may need to check this.

I think super sperm can be found at top of the fallopian tube an hour after intercourse but most of them hang about in the cervix for a bit! Unfortunately 99% of them get stuck at the cervix and of the 1% that make it to the womb only 0.1 of them will make it to the egg! (But dont worry we are still talking thousands here- and it only takes one!). Sperm actually hang about at the top of the fallopian tube before ovulation and as soon as ovulation occurs the egg releases a chemotactic factor (special chemical) that the sperm swim towards. Is very cool!

Cor this is all stuff from my degree (part of it was reproductive physiology which was only module I got a 1st for! haha) scary how easily I have forgotten a lot of it.

Makes you think its harder than it looks to get up the duff.
