Is a HSG painful - Booked for tomorrow

Hi All

Been TTC for 18 months with no success so am being sent for various tests and have a HSG booked for tomorrow.
Is it painful or got any tips???

I did not find it painful, just uncomfortable in the same way as a smear.

I took 2 nurofen and 2 paracetomol about 40 mins before the procedure to make sure.

The best tip I think is to do whatever you can to relax. Take deep breaths etc, because if you are relaxed it is much easier. It will be over before you know it.

Take a sanitary towel with you, as you will leak dye and maybe a bit of blood afterwards.

A HSG should not be painful provided the dye is injected very slowly and carefully. It is a useful test to have done as it can give information not easily accessible by other methods. Deformities INSIDE the tube can only be seen on x-ray.

The person doing the procedure should be able to tell you whether your fallopian tubes are patent (open).

I was given painkillers prior to this procedure, do take a sanitary towel for use afterwards as that dye does come out. I didn't find the HSG too bad overall; the fear was worse than the reality.

Actually it is really interesting.
If you can, get them to turn the screen so you can watch. How often do you get to see your innards?!

Let me know how you get on Clairbear - I am having one next Wednesday. I have heard it is good to take painkillers beforehand.

I had mine today. I was told to take painkillers and i'm glad i did. If i'm honest it was a little painful but also over very quickly. It was more of a sharp pain. Def take a pad. For some reason i've spent the day expecting to pee blue dye

And if you can watch it then do, it was amazing to see!

Well I had the HSG done today and it was fine,just like a smear really. I watched it on screen and it was amazing. My tubes are clear but have loads of kinks and my uterus is a slightly odd shape.
I took the painkillers beforehand and not had to take anymore so all good

I started trying for a baby in Feb 08 and became pregnant in March 08, unfortunately I had a miscarriage at 12 wks. I had to have an evacuation and d&c done but there was something left inside me so I was back in theatre 2wks later. We then continued to try for a baby but with no luck. 6 wks ago I was back in theatre for a laparoscopy and dye test, my consultant found he couldn't get any dye through my tubes. He then advised the HSG test as the dye is thinner. The evacuations, d&c's and laparoscopy were all done under a general anaesthetic so I was not worried about the HSG, after all they would use anaesthetic if it were painful, wouldn't they? How wrong I was, it was the most painful thing I have ever had done. The insertion of the speculum is uncomfortable, the insertion of the catheter gives crampy pains but when the dye is inserted, oh my god! I thought I was dying. I started feeling dizzy then sick and then I passed out. This went on for a couple of minutes with me keep passing out. I remember thrashing my head around and just screaming. The good news is the dye went through the tubes and as I was awake I had the results there and then, instead of having to wait to see my consultant. I recovered after 15 minutes although I had a slight crampy pain and bled for a couple of hours after, I think I was suffering with shock though. I had taken antibiotics before hand and 400mg of brufen and 1g of paracetamol, what a waste as I didn't seem to feel any relief from the pain. Before I had the procedure I knew my tubes were blocked and the HSG has unblocked them, so it has been worth it and the pain did only last a couple of minutes. I never thought getting pregnant could be so difficult and stressful. My next step is to start clomid so i have my fingers crossed x

the waiting list at my local hospital is more than 3 months and I am looking for where I could do this privately london/ surrey. Any advice?

I had my Hsg today. I'd say it 'smarted'. The radiographer said it was because I had a narrow cervix opening so he had to push it through. I took pain killers and Kalms beforehand which helped but it was still incredibly uncomfortable! I'm still cramping (had it done at 8.30am) and spotting. Hoping it eases soon!
Happy ending though because everything looked ok :) if I get a baby in the end it'll be worth it!

Limno ? I had an HSG done privately at the Spire in Harpenden a few weeks back ? they were very efficient organising it and the staff were very kind and supportive. If you?re looking more locally, I?d recommend choosing a hospital that can do the procedure on their own premises. I was messed about for weeks by my local private hospital in Beds. Turns out they were trying to squeeze me into the same limited Tuesday afternoon session that was offered to NHS patients at the local NHS hospital ? wanting to charge me a considerable fee for the privilege! No sooner had I got an appointment, the hospital administrator called me to cancel it as she basically implied that if my period didn?t arrive on time later in the week, I?d be stopping NHS patients who?d been waiting a lot longer being seen (the HSG has to be done on your cycle days 7-10). Anyway, I hope it goes well!
